DEFINITION OF TERMS

12 Port: The early (1950s style) cross flow 12 port heads manufactured for 216-235-261 Chevrolet engines and 270-302 GMC engines.  Includes:  Wayne Chevrolet, Wayne GMC, Horning-Fisher GMC, Fisher GMC, Howard GMC, Algon GMC or reproductions of aforementioned heads; aluminum or cast iron.

Early Engine: Domestic and foreign engines generally designed and produced before 1960 by major automotive manufacturers.  Aftermarket blocks are not allowed and will be classified as a Late Engine.  Approved engines are listed in Table 1.  Engines can be added to the list by petitioning the Drag Race Rules Committee.

Late Engine: Domestic and foreign engines generally designed and produced starting in the early 1960’s by major automotive manufacturers.  Aftermarket blocks and heads based on these engines are also included.  Approved engines are listed in Table 2.  Engines can be added to the list by petitioning the Drag Race Rules Committee.

Late: Modern 230-250-292 cu. in. Chevrolet stock heads or modified versions of same.  Also includes special late 12 port heads such as Duggan, Skinner, or special 12 port heads fabricated from V/8 heads.
Contemporary Engine: Domestic and foreign engines generally designed and produced starting in the 1980’s by major automotive manufacturers and not designated as Early or Late engines.

Nostalgia Classes: Body styles generally associated with Early and Late engines.  Chassis must be front engine/rear drive.  Engine modifications are restricted to older technology levels.  Computers are allowed for data collection only.  Electronic and crank trigger ignition systems are allowed.

Contemporary Class: All vehicles that do not fit into the Nostalgia Classes

Power Adders:

Stock Head: Any cylinder head which was original equipment manufactured (OEM) for a particular engine

Specialty Head: Any aftermarket, export, fabricated or original equipment manufactured (OEM) cylinder head installed on a block for which it was not designed (e.g., Chevy small block V-8 cylinder head installed on a 153 cu. in. Chevy 4 cylinder block)

“S” Head: Stock head, any modification

“A” Head:            Aftermarket and contemporary head, any modification

Flathead:                        Valves in block

F-head:                        One valve in head, one valve in block

OHV:                        Overhead valve

SOHC:                        Single overhead cam

DOHC:                        Dual overhead cam
