Hello again hope all had a great thanksgiving.Iam looking for what type of oil or gear lube I use for the steering box on my manual steering box in my 54 chevy belair.Again thank you in advance for your responses. "our Group project" is getting closer to being on the road

It is not uncommon to use chassis lube in place of oil. The advantage is it holds up to use and does not leak out of the gear case as oil might do.

'Chassis lube'? Is that a specific compound, or a class of lube perhaps?

I would say in your neck of the woods and climate you might call in "slack adjusting compound"...... SCRAP

Okay,well it was too general I guess. Lithium compound grease is good. Is that better? \:\)

I like synthetic chassis lube it works as well but not affected by temp and doesn't pack off to the side and not lube the steering gear. I have taken steering boxes apart lubed with petroleum base grease and they were ruined because the grease had packed to the side and hardened. Since I switched to synthetic I have never had a problem. Just my thoughts.


Been there, Done that, Hope to live long enough to do it again.
