I've built my 261 engine with a 848 head, a Bulldog cam and one of Langdon's Mini-HEI distributor set ups. it's installed in a '50 2-door sedan and I'm getting ready to tune it up. Does anyone know how much advance I should use to start the process? the engine starts immediately, responds very well but when it drops below About 1,500 rpms it stalls and quits.

Hmmm....sounds deeper than that to me. I'd start the timing at 8 degrees advanced with out vacuum and see if that helps. The high idle sounds like carb problems, vacuum leak, or even valve hanging open. What are your valves adjusted at? Is that cam hydraulic or solid?
Okay, you may be onto something, I'll give it a try at 8 degrees. The engine has solid lifters and the valves are adjusted to ? I need to go back to my build sheet to verify, I'll check and add that to the message.

I'd adjust the valves to .010 intake and .012 exhaust...that may be a bit loose but better a bit loose and to tight. Someone can give the correct specs if these aren't right.
Any word yet? would like to hear what you think of the bulldog cam.
Sorry to hold you up, my everyday cruise/car show truck had a lifter shaft break in two (the bar the rocker arms move on) and I've been focused on it rather than the car. Promise I'll let you know how it runs after giving it some TLC.

Just for comparison sake, the 261 I just finished building and started last week has a Schneider cam, 492 lift, 280 duration, fairly tight centerline for a good bit of rumpety rump. Relatively large cam for a street motor. Idles at about 800 rpm. 1500 rpm at idle for the bull dog cam cannot be correct. You may have a vacuum leak or something. My distributor is set up, for the time being, at 0 degrees of initial advance. Have you confirmed that you have your distributor set to fire no. 1 cylinder at tdc? Are you sure your timing marks on the flywheel indicate tdc?
