I have a 33 Chevy with a 250 mounted that barely fits. I am told that the 292 I really want in there is longer. Specifically about 1" longer at the harmonic damper. Is it any longer between the bell housing mount surface and the tip of the water pump shaft?
It is taller but not longer. Some 292 dampeners might be longer, I don't know. But that should not be a problem. Go for it.

The 292 is a couple inches taller but not longer that I'm aware of. Some 292's had 3 groove pulleys and that's how they seemed to get long. Note that the 292 will Not mount directly in place of the 250. The mounts are different on the 292.
The mount on the right side was moved forward because the fuel pump was moved back. That also makes the cams not interchange unless an electric fuel pump is used.

Thanks. I know about the mount. Tom at 12bolt has a couple of adapters for the motor mount. With everything else so similar wonder why GM moved the mount and pump..............

Probably because the 292 was strictly a truck engine and maybe because you can't have Everything the same( rolls eyes) lol.

Rough measurements with engine in truck. 21"wide, 35"tall 35" long.
Bigger then a v8 in a few areas. Better then a v8 in many areas.

The fuel pump lobe was in the way of the longer stroke. Moved inline with a main web to be out of the way.

While the 250 and 292 blocks are the same length, I thought the stock 292 water pump was a little longer, making the installed engine slightly longer.

I just measured my 250 and my 292. Both are 3-15/16" from the machined front block face to the front face of the water pump pulley, well give or take 1/32. So I conclude the 250 and 292 are the same length.

That said, you maybe right, some of the later-year 292 water pumps might be longer, just like the v8 was. Not sure about that. I may have even swapped some pumps around to get a shorter one, too long ago to remember.
