I have a line on a 292 that was installed in a farm machine. I'm wondering if there are differences in such an engine that I should be told about before proceeding with purchase. I want to put it in a 1941 Chevy coupe. Thanks.
I have heard the flywheel-to-crank flange bolt pattern is different on some of the industrial applications. I talked to a guy who had a 292 in a forklift who told me the forklift motor used an oddball crank flange bolt pattern that is different than the standard chevy pattern. So check that and make sure your flywheel will fit before you buy
Good info, thanks. I don't have a flywheel for a 292, but I have one on the back of a 230 I own.
Even if it is the same bolt pattern, also keep in mind that many (if not all) 292 use 1/2" bolts in the crank flange, and the 230 uses 7/16" bolts. To mount a flywheel from a 230, it may need to be modified for the larger 1/2" bolts. Some 292's have 2 or 3 dowel pins. A 230 flywheel will most likely be drilled for only one.
1963-1966 292 used 7/16 bolts and same bolt pattern as any other Chevy engine , V8 included. Starting in 1967 the bolts went 1/2 and also used 3 dowel pins.
Industrial blocks , cranks, heads were all the same as truck parts. Intakes and exhaust could sometimes be a Different than GM part.
Sometimes the compression would be raised to burn a alternative fuel like propane.

Have you ever heard of, or seen a 292 having a different crank flange pattern? This guy I talked to told me he needed a different pattern for his forklift?
Never seen a 292 in a forklift. Seen and worked on a few forklifts myself. I have seen GM 181/ 3.0l 4 cyl engines in forklifts. The old ones had a SBC bolt pattern and the newer ones are different and have a 1 piece rear seal.
Maybe the guy I talked to was confused.
This engine has a casting number of 352194, making it a 1973 - 1984, according to the inliners page on casting numbers.
The owner has not yet sent me pictures of it, other than that number.
OK, I have some photos now but I guess I can't post them directly on this forum. Is there a way? There is a gizmo on the lower RH side that has two wires coming out of it, and one runs to the starter solenoid I'm pretty sure. I wonder what it is for. I don't recognize it but perhaps it is something "normal." Owner has not sent me photos of the rear. I may go look at it tomorrow.
