Do I have the right fuel pump for my 292? I have seen on the net a couple of 292's were the fuel pump looks to be turned upside down. That is to say the inlet and outlet are on the top of the pump.

I think it's installed wrong.
There are different configurations of Chevy fuel pumps.
It looks like your pump matches the block and if the lever is pointing the right way, it should work. I would double check the application just to be sure.

So here is how the pump came out. Is this wrong or right? It seems to me if I turn the pump the other way the lobe on the cam would rip the lever off? I am totally confused............

Every 194-292 fuel pump I've seen faces the other way.
(opposite of what you have in picture)
If it's a sealed pump, the sheetmetal side with fittings points up.
If it's the old style take-apart pump, the cover faces up.
Either way the arm that rides on cam points up also.
