Looking at eng for sale and would like to buy it, but casting no. In casting # list says 230 250! I don't want a 230. How can I find out. Go easy on me fellas, I've been a member for years and just now getting brave enough to speak up.

The 230 and 250 are essentially the same engine. The only difference is the crankshaft throws - increasing the stroke by .28" which in 1966 yielded 15 additional horsepower in the 250 option. Both the 230 and the 250 blocks are bored to 3.875 from the factory.

There are pros and cons to stroke in an engine. Some prefer shorter stroke as it can permit higher revs. If the block is in good shape for a rebuild don't let the potential of a 230 crank stop you from acquiring it as a foundation for a build.

There is a simple way to tell if it is a 250. Pull a sparkplug. Turn engine over until piston is at the top. If piston is dished, it is a 250. Flat top will be a 230.
