Hey guys. I'm about to purchase a 292 for my '69 C10 long bed. The owner either built or had it built to go in a '64 Chevy II to make it a "12 second car". The trans is a 700R4 and a 3:08 rear ratio. The engine is currently in his car now. At some point he changed his mind and went with a slightly milder cam. It's still pretty big though he couldn't give me the specs on it. The head has been modified by Mike Kirby with lump ports. I don't know what if any porting has been done or valve sizes. It has 1.75 ratio rockers. No idea on the compression. It has a Holley 4bbl sitting on a Clifford intake and to me looked like stainless steel headers. I've ridden in the car and with this combination it does feel streetable.

My truck is pretty stock with an SM465 4 speed compound low and I suspect 3:73 rear gears. I do mostly regular street and freeway driving with some light towing. It would be nice to surprise a few people at a light but it's not a priority. Do you have any suggestions for a milder cam?

Martin, a 292 in your C10 would be great. It would be good to know exactly what the cam is as the cam is the heart of performance. Will you also get the 700R4 and will you keep your Stock rear end or does the 3:08 rear come with it?

I am in the process of building a "truck" 292 build for my '68 C20 flatbed. 292, 700R4, and 3:55 gears. In OD. with the tires I run at 70mph the engine would be turning 2,000 rpm. It should be a stump puller anywhere below that. I got a low RPM cam from Crower but Tom Lowe has one also. Here are a couple of links to truck engine builds. I know you aren't really going this way but it may help because most of what is on this site is total race or street/race based.

If you get the 292 please post pictures of your installation. I'm replacing a worn out 350 so There will be a few mods necessary mostly mounts and power steering brackets. Right now mine is a 350/turbo400, Dana 60 3;55 dual wheel with a ratcheting locker.

Hey, Tom. How are you doing?
For now the only changes I have planned for the C10 are a Borg Warner T5 swap and some slot mags. That's really it. I drove it to a couple of the Rappin' shows but I don't know if you've seen it. The 292 that's in there is very tired and can't pull hills anymore.

My guestimation is that with the T5 I'll probably be running at 2500 RPM on the highway. I talked to another Inliner who has a 292 for his Land Rover. He selected a Crower cam based on the "Performance level 4" for the 250. https://www.crower.com/camshafts/chevy-194-250-6-cyl-compu-pro-hydraulic-cam-3.html
I am thinking of going the same way. I have the level 3 cam in my 250 powered Nova wagon now. It works great

One thing that I regret now is not taking pics of the engine while it was still in the owners car. I have nothing to refer back to except my memory, which isn't that good anyway.

Thanks for the links. I will have a look.

There seem to be endless combinations for these engines. The tough part is being honest with yourself about what the engine will REALLY be expected to do. In our case it should be pretty easy because the 292 was designed to be a truck engine.

I hope we can both have our trucks ready for the Convention next June in Carson City! smile

Martin,

Just curious how much you would have invested in the engine by the time your done?

I'm getting the engine for $4500. I sold a bunch of other parts that the owner threw in with it so I've made $500 back. So this would be to me a $4000 right now.
