Does anyone have a source for 302 Rod and Main Bearings (standard size)? Rebuilding the motor and finding some of these parts are getting difficult to find. Thanks
I'll look in my stash. I have some old GMC rod & crank bearings but don't remember the size. Right now I don't remember exactly where they are.
I just saw this:
GMC Bearings
Sorry, nothing where I thought it was. The shop is a big mess in the middle of a huge cleaning project now stalled until after the Convention. I'll keep looking.
It depends on the year of the engine you have, earlier engines have different bearings from the later ones finding standard might be hard.
Also, it's a 1954 Military 302
Not sure but I think the change came around '55-'56 and it is listed to the width of the tab on the bearing shell that crops the bearing from spinning.
I'm really involved with the convention right now but after Saturday I'll check some old books and try to nail this down for you. I'm sure the info is here in our archives somewhere also.
The forging numbers are pretty accurate for things such as connecting rods, to determine the wide tang/narrow tang issues, but there are some rods I've found that can have either, even with the same forging number, I show an example of that in my book. And that is the same for the big wrist pin/small wrist pin rods as well. So that makes physically measuring the rods a necessity to confirm which style you have before you order parts. The Stovebolt went through similar changes also with its main bearings. Rods, cranks and heads can all be swapped over time, so the date becomes less crucial because if the interchange possibilities than can skew the parts required based solely on dates.
FYI, found the bearing I needed at this vendor. Great service and shipping was very prompt.
