Has anyone successfully installed a 292 into a 65 Chevelle? Currently I have the stock 230, which has never been rebuilt at all. I found a rebuilt 292 at a killer deal. I know about the PS mount is different and I have some ideas on it, but I'm really concerned with the air cleaner clearing the hood. Is there a recommended type air cleaner advised? In the future I will most likely get the lower profile 4 bbl setup but for now its all stock. Any help is much appreciated.

Check the search section. As I recall that question was discussed a while back. I think the engine is a little longer & taller than the 250.

An air cleaner from Patrick's should work.

i know the block in 1.75" taller than the other sixes, not sure about length though...

The 292 is taller, but the same length.

The motor mount and fuel pump are in different locations from your 230. (pass. side)

As for hood clearance, how much do you have now?
If it's less than 2" you may have a problem. If appearances aren't an issue, you may be able to find another air cleaner at a salvage yard that would work better. Just look around.

Ford used a much shorter 1 bbl Holley carb in the 50's and 60's that could also help. Be aware that they came in several sizes and that many of them will be too small for your application. Not sure about the bolt pattern either, you may need to slot the mounting holes. Of course, if you run 2 or 3 of them, then the smaller sizes could work out quite well.

Perhaps waiting to get the 4 bbl setup is the wiser thing to do...

Thanks folks!! I think I'll get the 292 anyway and keep it up on the engine stand till I get the 4bbl setup. I do want to do this swap the right way. Once I get everything I need to do this all in one shot, as I said this is my daily driver. chevyII, thanks for the contact. I'll look him up. I've done some research in the ol' Power Manual, it mentions the changes but not in detail.

You can fit side draft Webers DCOE's. You can find them on Ebay along with manifolds.

Ted, you are also going to have trouble with the sump location on the 292 pan as it does not clear the steering linkage. As for the air breather, If I remember correctly, part of the inner support on the hood was removed on his wagon. Hopefully you will get aold of him or he will see this post. Good Luck

i've got a 65 elcamino with a 292. use the 230 oil pan and pickup. for motor mounts use mid 60's truck six brackets that bolt to the motor. they will accept the tougher v8 motor mounts to fit the frame. on the pass side unbolt the stock frame mount and bolt in a piece of 3/8 steel flat stock to extend toward the front to relocate the frame mount. this is easy to do. air cleaner, this is where it gets tight. i notched the inner hood brace and used a edelbock triagulated foam air filters for a while, the i used a old carberatered buick GN air inlet and mated a remoted filter to it. it looks kind of neat, if your a farmer. i am a partime farmer. tom

Well folks, as an update, I looked and paid for my 292. Looks great and only paid 150 bucks! Now I just have to find a way to pick it up from the seller and get it home up on my engine stand. What are the recommended size bolts I should get to mount the engine on the stand?

Hi again everyone! Well, I have the 292, offy intake, Holley 4bbl, all looks to be going very well. I'm still getting everything ready so I can install soon. I'm still a hazy on linkage setup. I've seen some pics in other posts I searched, I just can't get a solid plan. I have a new adjustable detent/kickdown cable ordered and I'm probably going to get a universal throttle cable too. I just need a little guidance on what brackets to get or atleast a picture of a fabricated setup to use. Anyone out there help me out??? Thanks!

I run a 292, in my truck [OEM] but added Offy intake, Clifford headers, Edelbrock 500 cfm 4-Bbl [used to run the 390 Holley, but it went sproiiing! after 25 years on the road -- so I went with an AFB type]. I used to have rube goldberg'd throttle/bellcrank apparatus in my '68 C/10 Stepside pick-up. The rube-goldberg rig was never satisfactory -- it could come apart on the road or jam and usually wouldn't go to WOT. When I rebuilt the engine, I reconfigured the throttle set-up to cable type. I swapped in the accelerator pedal and arm from a '72 Chevy pick-up and got a Lokar type throttle cable. A throttle spring adapter [from Jeg's] was necessary to route the cable to the throttle arm on the carb.
It's kind of a hair trigger, but it works.
Since it's in a truck that was originally ordered with the 292, I can't help with conversions for a street car. I used a 3-1/2 x 12" Moroso air cleaner with a K&N element, and I've still got enough space to heat foil-wrapped burritos on the top of the air cleaner.
Twisted 6 knows a lot more about 292s in the light car chassis.

I basically have 4 days to do this and I think I planned out everything in sequence as I don't want to screw things up rushing anything. I've learned a lot on I.I. BB so I will put it to use. Hello fellow Inliners, I wanted to give everyone an update. I did my swap by myself in three days. This was my first time ever doing this and I surprised myself. Everything worked out great. And Wow, what a difference!! Some mods that I had to do was change to cable throttle. I tried to rig up something using the existing rod linkage and well, it worked but not liked I wanted. So what I did was got a gas pedal assembly from an Chevy pickup that used throttle cable and installed it. Needless to say it works awesome and doesn't really change the looks inside the car. I have a Holley 600 4bbl on Offy intake. I didn't make any changes to the carb at all, although I think I should. I'm just a little hesitant cause I'm not a carb guru. Engine runs great but I think it can run better. I have Clifford headers and glasspacks which I'll probably install this weekend or next. Right now I have AC R44XLS plugs. Is this okay? The only reason I did this is because when I bought the motor thats what was in there. If there is anything you guys can suggest, please let me know. If anyone has questions about the swap, I'd be happy to share with everyone.

I'm sure someone will be able to help you on the carb and plug advice, but in the meantime I'll say that's a nice clean installation and your add ons and color combos with your Malibu set it off just right.

Congratulations on the engine swap! As far as the plugs I would leave them as is until I had the carb all dialed in with jetting and power valve selection provided they are firing ok. I don't have exact plug numbers for the 292 in front of me but an R45XLS or an R44XLS sounds about right. If it helps any: R = resistor type, 44 is the heat range, XL = extended reach ( long threads , S = supressor tip. The 44 is one heat range step cooler than the 45. Also be aware that AC Delco has dropped some plugs out of production and use a single number to replace 3 or more of the older numbers.

I'm sure that 292 woke your Malibu right up! Enjoy.

Thanks guys!!! Mike, I appreciate the info on the plugs, I never did know what the XLS meant. Redchevy, I contacted a fellow I.I. member and he happened to have an extra, so I bought it from him. If you look on ebay you can find them but I have yet seen a chrome one.
Hopefully, after state inspection, I'll put the headers and glass packs on.
Where should I start on the carb? I think its running a little rich (little black smoke and fuel smell at start up).

ted, looks great. how did you do the pass side motor mount? i can see the big plate on the motor but nothing else. tom

Tom, what I did was got a hold of 1/4" steel plate and basically just offset the mounting holes and eliminated the mechanical fuel pump. The new holes just cleared the fuel pump area. The lower left mount hole was tapped and the other two have grade 8 bolts and nuts w/lockwashers. The plate is actually mounted to the engine with five bolts (three existing, and two on the fuel pump holes). The two bolts on the fuel pump area are allen style and countersunk so the original (230) engine mounts clear. I just took a few measurements and nailed it the first time through. The plate is also used as a block off plate for the fuel pump. The 292 slipped in like a glove. I'll get more pics on the link above tomorrow and show the finished product. Thanks again Tom for all of your advice, it proved valuable to my install. -Ted

chevyII, that snorkel came stock in buick turbo charged cars from the 80's. only on the carbed version, so early 80's, probably ending in 83. tom

What brand radiator are you useing?

Hello fellas! I've been busy lately getting ready for my third tour to Iraq. Anyways, Hank, my radiator is made by Northern. It has two one inch horizontal cores. I tell ya, being here in Texas, the original brass two core wasn't cutting it. Now, its a cool 180, even in 104 degree heat we had today. The best single upgrade I've ever made. Ted

I just wanted to say that where I work now, in Fairfield, Oh., they paint & retrofit the Humvees with armor and bullet proof glass. There is a constant stream of Camo-painted Humvees streaming through the streets 24 hours a day.
