I have an opportunity to buy a 292 tomorrow. Looks like maybe a 100 dollars for engine complete with bell housing and granny gear 4 spd trans. Engine ran till yesterday, when it was removed from 67 Chevy truck.
Guy says it would overheat after running 5 minutes. He is a V8 guy, so he just pulled it and wants to unload it fast.
So, say it was overheated in the past. Seems very likely. If it was overheated, do these things crack anywhere. Or, are they pretty tough. I'm looking for a 292 to build, and I'm trying to judge if it might not even be a good core to start with. I know it will need rebuild of course. Are these things prone to block or head failure, or do they tend to be bulletproof.

The over heating could be many things from a bad rad. to water pump, head gasket, Or maybe even a cracked head? But for a 100 bucks and The block it self is Good I'd take it myself. Hope this helps }[oooooo]

I'd ask to pull the head off and at least check for cracks. If you can see them with the naked eye, FORGET IT!

292s are pretty much bombproof. They operate well in the heat [and I live in Tucson] -- better than V8s.
Sounds like a good deal just for the price of the sheetmetal (oil pan, lifter panels, valve cover, etc) alone. Throw in a core block and a 4-speed and it's a sweet deal.
Funny, I PM'd a kid ("67SUB") on _67/72Chevytrucks.com_ in Hurst TX, asking what he wanted for his 292 engine mount set-up last night. No reply. If that stuff is only $100 bucks it would almost be worth the run from Tucson. Just kidding, a 1400 mile road trip would be more fun than feasible.

Yep, it's the same guy. You see my name, Tx Firefighter, well, it should be Hurst Tx Firefighter. He lives south of the fire station. I went down this morning to look at the 292. Whole story...he raced someone, the engine got real hot, pressurizes the radiator as soon as you start it, and the engine knocks. Something amiss inside it for sure. You'd have to hope it is a bad head gasket, but the knock thing is troubling. He also says the harmonic balancer wiggles around like crazy. Felt and looked tight to me, so maybe the snout of the crank broke...I dunno. Long story short, he offered to give me the engine for free. He's keeping the tranny for another project. needs it out of his way. He has no garage and it will get rained on in his back yard.

Racing a '67 Suburban with a 292! Now that takes optimism! LOL. I had a '67 K/10 Sub w/454 and I thought it was underpowered.
The harmonic balancer on my last mill [1977 - 2002 RIP (sniff)] went bad after only 250,000, miles. It went off-kilter and cut into the timing gear cover. Over-revving (_>5,000 rpm) can cause this prematurely, I'm told. So can extreme age.
You can't beat the price. If nobody wants 'em, I could find a use for the 292 engine mount "stands" -- I already have the "knees". I'm thinking of putting a 292 L6 and SM 465 in a '72 Blazer body that was set up for 350/350. Just a future project. Mainly I need to get my '68 stepside back on the road.
