I'm in the process of changing over to power steering in my '70 C-10 with a 292 and have run into a problem.
The only power steering brackets I could come up with are from a '78 292. They will bolt up O.K. but there is interference with the bypass nipple on the waterpump.
I know that, starting in '75,Chevy 292 pumps no long had the external bypass hose.
My question is,when they eliminated the bypass hose did they put an internal bypass in the block? Would it be safe to change to a '75 or laterpump to avoid the interference?
Of course,if I did that,I'd have to go with a later thermostat housing to lose that nipple.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

I found out that 292 water pumps, 1975 and after, did have an external bypass hose but it was a lot smaller; 5/8" vs. 1 3/8" for pre '75.

This gives lots of room to mount the later power steering brackets.

You do have to switch to a '75 or later thermostat housing to make it work.

Check out another current thread. Actually it's a rehashed thread from July.
