I am trying to figure out the oil pump pickup bracket for a 292, I have a bracket from a 250 I think and it is too short so I don't know if 250 and 292's are different in this area or if the pan is different. Either way I need a longer bracket or different bearing bolt. Anybody know how this is supposed to work or if I just have the wrong bracket.

Also the bolts that hold pump to the block, I put in regular bolts that fit in the threads and they don't really hold the pump in place well. The GM parts books say they take just regular 5/16 x 3/4 bolts but it seems like they should have a collar on them. Any thoughts?
What pan are you going to use?
If it's a 292 pan, the pick up does not get close enough to the bottom of the pan. Or, you have the correct pickup but wrong 250 bracket?

Just a guess ,but I would say you need a different bracket?
Is the oil pump a high volume pump? If it is ,that will raise the pick up about a 1/4" ?

292's use a main cap bolt that is different than a 250. the 250 bolt stands up about 2" from the cap. just make simple bracket to fill in the area. be sure to rotate you motor to see if it interferes with the sump tube. i have had trouble there my self. tom

The engine is a short block 292, if I remember correctly when I test fitted the pan the pickup sat in a good position. So they must have put the wrong bolt in when it was rebuilt, or there is another longer version of the bracket out there.

I did some more research and found that the part numbers for bearing cap stud for 250's and 292's are the same but the part number for pick up tube and bracket are different. So does anybody have a picture of the longer bracket or have one to sell? I checked previously at the dealer and the part is NLA

there is most definately a longer version of the bolt. i have one in my motor and in one on a stand. the standoff portion is almost 2" tall. i may be able to get one out of another xtra motor i have. it would not be difficult to make a piece to make up the difference on yours. here is a pic. click on it and you can zoom in and kinda see my type of bolt i am trying to describe. .tom

Wow, cool turbo.

I guess it wouldn't be that hard to weld some nuts and bolts togeter, I would just be worried about the whole thing coming lose off the stud, I guess some loctite would help with that.

Thanks for all the info
