Is it a Jeep engine?

Yes
This is the Vietnam era jeep. Not many were sold as surplus because the govt was worried that their high center of gravity and swing axel rear suspension (like the early corvair) would lead to law suits.

Ok.Thanks guys. I thought it might be a Jeep engine, but wasn't sure. Are they of Chrysler/Jeep manufacture or sourced parts from Ford or GM as they were in the old AMC days.

They rode pretty smooth compared to the old CJs but as Leif said the handling was somewhere between pretty bad and terrible. I don't think I have ever seen one that someone got their hands on surplus.
