just had new guides fitted to my 235 cylinder head,been advised that umbrella type seals are the best,where can i get some from,as uk suppliers only sell head sets, when they have them in stock that is.
I also heard they are the best because they do not wear down the valve stems like the PC/teflon ones do.

But you need the ones made of Viton (SP)not just the plan old black rubber ones.

IIRC, the color is a bluish grey???

I believe the colors vary? I use the positive type "teflon" seals on the intakes only.The newer types won't wear guides.

Try Ford seals for the late model 5.0L V8 or the 4.9L six. They are 11/32" umbrella style and are made of very stable impregnated nylon. The 5.0 GT ones are a little shorter to handle the increased lift of the HO cam - I think they are red in color on the exhaust side at least.

Don't even think of using no seals as your oil consumption will be awful - like 250 - 400 miles/qt. Good luck.

Blue, sorry to impose on your thread...but while we are discussing these seals....will this info(type of seal material) apply to a 1964 194 cu.in. also. I have a bit of an oil consumption issue & a puff of smoke that is only seen from the tailpipe on start up...never when I put my foot into it.

Hi Duce,that sounds just like the problem i had,ran fine but on idle when hot there was a haze,start up when hot and you had to wait for the fog to lift before moveing off bit like an old pre mix two stroke.

Blue, ditto that except I get a small puff not a fog of smoke on the start. My spark plug color is good (dark tan) no smoke at cruise or accel. I do see a drop or 2 of oil on the threads of a couple of plugs when I remove them. There are no leaks from the valve cover that would contribute to the oil found in this area. Must be internal. Compression within 3-5 psi down the line. Not looking like rings. Hoping we get a few more posts to confirm a type (with p/n) of seals we could try. It will certainly be the least $$$ fix. Keep me posted on your progress & I will do the same....Duce
