Hey fellas,
If I put a 292 in place of my 250 what all will I have to change?I realize the side covers are bigger on the 292,but what about the crankshaft pully/harmonic dampner, head cover, oil pan, intake, exhaust manifolds, water pump, fuel pump etc.? Thanks in advance for any replies.Sincerely,Gerald.

No matter what you are putting it in, you'll most likely have to change the right side motor mount. Depending on what waterpump/radiator you have, you might need to swap some parts. You must use a 292 pump with a 292 motor. If it's going into a truck, you should have no problem. Passenger cars you might have to use an electric fan due to the length.
The info you give us, the more we can give back!

Like Rap said you should not have a problem if it is going into a truck. Most cars you would have to make a few other changes. elec. fan. Because of the water pumps. The motors are the same lenght They are just taller then our 194,230,250s And the right side mount is in a different location.
Oil pans will inter change from one block to the other But when useing the 250 oil pans you must also change the oil pick up tube. Valve cover, intake ,exhaust will also inter change. If you have headers on the 250 and put them on to a 292 There ? may have to be changes made here as well because of the 292 being taller The headers may no longer clear the floor pan/fire wall area or other linkage issues.

But it is always good to find someone who has done the same at one time Or onther and to find out what Problems they have Seen or ran into. And everyone knows the added benefits of more cubes 194-230-250-292-vthings 283-307-327-350-396-427-454-502.And adding power boosters, turbos, super chargers, blowers, NOS etc. We all want to save a few bucks one way or another... And some wannbe back yard builders may have been there done that But that doesn't always mean it was done right. So get all the info that you can and use what works best for you. Because what works for one guy, May not work for the Next guy!!.. In our 30 plus yrs of working on cars & motors, we have seen alot of mickey mouse jobs. Even those that have came from other shops. So be cautious and use your best judgement.

hope this helps. }[oooooo]

hello..as i stated, be careful who you listen to- unless those giving advice have done this maybe they just want to talk about it-find those that have done it-they know.....but remember its about the engine and engineering , not the people-can you change physics?

Hey fellas, thanks for the replies.I live in the deep south and rabbit hunt with beagle hounds. We chase swamp rabbits here so hence my name. This motor would go in a 78 chevy k-10 4x4 short wheel base pickup.I had a 250 six in it and spun a main so rather than rebuild it I bought another 250 already rebuilt from Advance Auto and I got it all together and the son of a gun has a bad valve in it so I'm going to have to take it back out and get a replacment or get my money back.Well my truck has 35 inch tires on it and in low range with the 250 it has plenty of power but in high range it does ok but I could use more power and am not going back with a v-8 as it was before i put the first 250 in.Any way I do have dual headers on it and there is plenty of space between the radiator and fan-I have a spacer on the fan and it's still actually to far back-.Someone said the right side or passenger side motor mount would have to be changed,do you guys mean motor support bracket? If so what does it have to come off of?Also someone said or typed that I would have to change the oil pickup tube if so where can i get one?Other than the above I mentioned and the side covers will all the other parts work, oil pan, headcover, water pump no,intake manifold, carb etc? Thanks again fellas and I know i duplicated some of my questions from earlier so please excuse for I want to make sure to get it all in LOL.See ya'll................Gerald.

Gerald If yu can keep the 292 oil on the 292 and the pan (should clear?) You would be better off mainly because it would give you a extra Qt of oil from 5- to being 6qts. But I will check something for because i have this funny feeling you can NOT use the 250 oil pan on the 292 because the 250 is not as deep in the front as the 292 is.Because of the stroke of the 292. I will stick a 250 pan on the 292 i have here on the stand and check it. Now as far as the passanger side motor mount Look for UPS trucks or old bread trucks Or other panel trucks Or even maybe a old Bus(school bus)For this frame mount.
hope this helps.}[oooooo]

I have used a 250 pan on a 292. The only problem I ran into is I had to put a slight dimple in the 250 oil pickup tube to clear the crank. Joe

I switched from a 230 to a 292 about a year ago on my 63 chevy pickup. If you are buying a complete motor and not a long block the only things you'll have to worry about is the radiator being big enough, the exhaust manifolds being about 2" higher, and that passenger side bracket. I luckally got the brackets when I bought my engine but If you don't have it you'll have to hunt, there is a difference in the shape. Lucky for you your truck was made to work with this engine, if you look at your engine crossmember you should see two holes drilled a few inches in front of the passeger side mount (thats how it was on the 63 at least), you move the new mount up to there.

If your buying a longblock however there are a few things that won't mix namely the water pump and side cover. A stock intake will work from the 250 but you'll wan't a bigger carb (though the 230's one has worked for me in a pinch), I think the fuel pump is the same, the oil pan is bigger, altenator brackets might be different depending on the water pumps length and all that I'm not sure, the valve cover is the same and so is the distributor and coil.

Is there anything else? Good luck on your project, You'll love the 292s extra grunt. K.

I removed a 250 from a '74 GMC 3500 duallie and installed a 292 from a '63 p/u with no problems. I bought the correct engine mounts from the local dealer, used the original radiator, carb and other bolt on parts from the 250. Seems as if I had to do some work on the alternator brackets because the '63 had a generator and had to drill one hole for the starter from the 250. I did this in about '83 so may have forgotten a few things, but do remember it was not too hard and I'm not an ace mechanic by any means.

It made a new truck of the one ton.

Hey Twisted six, have you had a chance to check the 250 oil pan on the 292 yet?If you do I would appreciate your opinion. Also you guys that have used both the 250 and the 292 I would like to hear how ya'll feel about the difference in torque and power between the two.I do know the difference between the power of a chevy 307 and 350 and other v-8's but have never been in a vehicle with a 292 in it.I have owned a truck that had a 230 six in it but I really can't tell a difference between it and a 250.I do realize that 42 cubes is a good bit like the difference between a 307 and a 350 or a 250 and a 292.If I go through with the 292 I will have to get the other parts because I don't as of yet have an old 292.Does anyone know if Tom Langdons misc. Chevy mounts will help with the pass side motor mount for a 292?I can call him of course.Well thanks for all of you guys help and I'll be seeing ya'll later............Gerald..........A Honda tech with a K-10.

If any of you don't have a bolt holding your pressed on cam gear also,I advise putting one on it for mine walked off.Gerald
Posted By: Twisted6 Re: 250 to 292 swap - 06/29/03 04:45 AM
Gerald
Was that gear ever heated? Because if it was a Alum gear and Not installed right. Yes it will come off the cam. And if it was never heated the inside of The gear will get shaved as it is Pressed on to the cam. That Is the MAIN reason to heat the gear Befor Installing it.}[oooooo]
