Considering a Pontiac OHC 6 as a donor/update engine for my newly acquired 1937 Pontiac 4 dr. A rod thru the block ended its Flathead 6's life. Its open double-drive shaft suggest it is amenable to an inline 6/T5 combo? Have a potential donor Chev 250 6 but the OHC Pontiac "Sprint" would sure look good. I suspect the initial engine purchase of the SOHC Pontiac 6 and rebuild costs would far exceed that of the 250 Chev costs? Any comments on pitfalls or things to look for in buying a Pontiac OHC 6 engine? I'm not looking for performance, just driveability and aesthetics for my "survivor" Pontiac.

Go a web search for OHC Pontiac's. There was a problem with that engine in oiling the lifters and cam. I believe the oil tube up to the head would plug starving the cam of oil. Check the head, cam, lifter bores, and lifters for wear.

If you can find the four barrel version, that would be a cool setup. Joe

If you want real, accurate info- please visit my Pontiac OHC6 forum. We have a bunch of guys on there that have been building them since their inception. Cammer6 and SPRINTBIRD have just about every OHC6 part known to man as well...

Yeah, I'm now registered there as well and have received good info. Trying to gather different perspectives especially as to the chassis. I have acquired a 200 4R and if it will fit I will use it instead of a T5 for my application. While my Pontiac is titled as a 1937, I believe it is a 1938 because it has the optional column shift first offered in 1938. Immediate concern is whether the SOHC 6 & 200 4R will fit without major X member mods. Have not been able to get a good look at underside, to take measurements. I will go to the SOHC 6 sites in hopes they can identify for me the flex plate & TVR adaptions I will need to fit the 200 4R to the SOHC 6. Thanks all for the comments.

There was a 37 Pontiac Coupe at a place I played hookey at during high school. It had suicide doors. The old goat that owned it wouldnt sell it to me. Then he died at age 90.
I miss him but miss the Pontiac More.
Please Post pictures. It would bring back great memories for me.

Hey Bill! This sounds like a fun project. I'm sure that Danny could help with any cross member mods after what he did to get the 4,200 in his pickup! Will you be putting a TBI and Megasquirt on this one? If so I've got to get the rest of my stuff put together so I can do what I promised! See you soon! \:D
