I need to transfer a 261 that is currently strapped to a pallet to a rolling cradle or and engine stand.

does anyone know if the greg smith universal engine cradle will hold the tall skinny inline engine securely enough to roll it around?

is is safe to bolt the engine to a stand by the bell housing to a t shaped base engine stand or is that to tippy??

Pete in NJ if anyone close has a cradle or sturdy stand to sell?!
ok I found a listing for what looks like the same cradle as the greg smith one that says it will work with a inline 6

http://allstarperformance.com/product.htm?prod=668

Universal cradle may be used on in-line 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines as well as older V8's. Adjustable 9" risers are positioned under oil pan rails, then 8' x 1" ratcheting strap is used to secure the engine to the cradle. Remove the risers and the cradle may be used for transmissions, wheels, tires, etc. Heavy duty, 3" swiveling casters move easily over garage and shop floors.

I may go with this as it seems quicker, and easier than trying to bolt up an engine stand maybe safer as the engine is down low and can\t be tipped like it could on the "T" base engine stand I have

I made one of these with material I had around the house. The dollys were inexpensive. You can actually dismantle the head etc. before putting the block on an engine stand and I have operated a motor for a short time while sitting in this cradle. It is very stable.Currently I have my 261 sitting in it.

I have some steel wheel casters and will make one up from your plans as that is cheaper and quicker

thanks peter
I found what looks to be a stronger version of the stand and ordered this one

I will post a review when I get it

HI GREENKNIGHT : I just cut a piece of 1/2 inch ply , the shape of the bell housing and set it on a rolling pallet . You can easily widen the " foot " of the piece to suit your requirements . Mine are for storage / occasional moving and do the job just fine . DON / FLEET
