I purchased a motor from a shop that ended up being kind of shady... The work ended up being O.K. but I did not see the casting # for my motor in the link to the left... The # that I have is 3994257. If any body can tell me what size and year this is it would be great... Also any other kind of #'s would also be great. (HP, Torque, ect.) Thanks...

Lee,Are you sure the number is correct? There is
a 3994258 in the lists.It's a 292,'63 - '66 and
'67 - '72 with different crank ends.

these are the #'s that are on the block: drivers side: 71 (then 1 1/2 inch space) 4257. Then on the pass. side of the block: c0n2, b51, 3994257, f0331caa, 11w235o590. I have been to the junk yard to get parts, and so far every thing that I have gotten has been for a 250 motor. thank you for any help!!!

You can tell if it is 292 by size of the plates on the side, 194 and 250 = 4 inches, 292 - 6 inches. Also the fuel pump and motor mount on the fuel pump side are different than a 194 or 250.

O.K. so I cheched the side plates and they are 6 inches long... So this means that it is actually a 292??? And if so, is it better to have a 292, then a 250? Is the 292 a good motor to hot rod??? I am new to the inline world, but I am sure that due to the cubic inch displacement it should have more hp, right? any info would be apprieciated...

Lee, both the 250 and 292 are excellent platforms to build a performance motor. Obviously there is no substitute for cubic inches but each motor has its purpose.

Probably the best thing you could do is get yourself a copy of Leo Santucci's book "Chevrolet Inline Performance Manual". Besides the performance info there is a wealth of build up tips, casting and part numbers, and good solid advice on the late model inlines from Chevy.

The book is available from the Club and is advertised in the 12 Port News.
