IM not sure to where to even ask a questiona bout my clutch.....I have had my truck for a while with no problems...accelerates smoothly usually even better than my new car...I drove it about 60 miles yesterday and after the 30 miles i moved it 2 times and when i would let out the clutch and give it gas like usual the thing made this clunking noise and the the truck surged as if i had no idea how to grive a manual transmission...Didnt think to much of it other than i thought it was wierd i drove the 30 miles back and after i got off the freeway each stop light it did the same but i tried to let it out slower and give it more gas so it wouldnt shake and surge...I finally got home and just as i did i parked it and deceided i needed be be pulled up further i put it into second gear and the clutch pedal was still puched in and it sounded as if something was rubbing together...the truch wasnt moving any it was just sitting their...Clutch still in and it was in gear....It sounded as if a moving part was rubbing against a non moving part...i toook it out and put it into neautral...I still heard the noise...I forgot if i let out the clutch or not...Any ideas on this...I really hope so becaus ei know something is wrong and i dont want to drop the trany if it isnt the clutch...Thanks alot i really appreciate it...

Let's make some tests:
First: Take off the clutch cover & see what's there ie; metal, friction materals, oil (a lot of both)etc.
Second: Check the 'free play' in the clutch pedal (should be 3/4" to 1") for mechanical clutches. A little more is okay, but not over 1 & 1/2"
Third: If you have a hydraulic system, have someone depress the pedal & see if the slave is working & the master is full etc.
Forth: With the parking brake on and the engine ideling; Depress the pedal & see if you can shift into 2nd or 3rd. Should go "right in" either one.
Now if there is a lot of debris in the cover, the clutch is probably toast. The noise(s)you described would indicate this.
But do all the tests & let's see????

Well im not sure i have only driven the truck maybe 100 miles sinc ei have had the truck for about 4 months...So i have no clue how many miles are on the clutch....This makes sense that the clutch might be glazed over or burned up that why it was chatering but what i dont understand is why when it is parked it makes that shhhhhhhhhhh noise like a friction noise of 2 things rotating against eachother...It seems like mabe if the clutch isnt adjusted correctly so when i push the pedal maybe it isnt fully engaging and the clutch and flywheel are still in contact and that is what you are hearing...I just dont want to have to drop the tranny to find out...When it is at idle and i pushed the clutch it shifts into both gears easily... Except after i hear that noise and i put it into gear and take it back out then put it back in it seems like the gears grind a little bit as if the gear was still spinning...to me that would say that the clutch had just enough friction with the fly wheel to spin the gear and so when i took it out of gear and put it back it was still spinning from before...Thanks for all the help
Don't forget about the throwout bearing. Mine makes a good bit of noise. If you have the clutch pushed in (neutral or in gear) and you hear a metallic rubbing sound that goes along with engine RPM, then it might just be the bearing. Just a though. Good luck. John
i had thought a little about the throw out bearing....now that i am thinking about it...it makes sense....Shouldnt it be adjusted so it doesnt make noise? Why is it making noise? Is it bad if you hear that metalic noise? Where can you adjust it at on the clutch linkage....

Mine was brand new and it made noise. I can't remember if it started right away or if it took awhile. I would think that it's possible the clutch is out of adjustment. Check your pedal free play, then see about adjusting the linkage based on the free play. See if the adjustments have any effect on the noise (different pitch, etc.) Good luck. John
where on the clutch linkage is the adjustments made? It makes complete sense that the clutch is out of adjustment....Does a clutch on an old truck need frequent adjustment? So i take it that it isnt a bad thing if it makes noise...thanks

Jason,You need to purchase a shop manual for your'64 Fleetside. This will help you in answering a lot of your mechanicl questions. In the case of the throwout bearing there should be some kind of nut and threaded rod combination at the bearing fork out the side of the clutch housing.Play around with the adjustment and see(learn) what happens. You may also need to adjust any shift arms you have.You've been doing a ton of work on your truck and it can get frustrating at times.Hang in there.
i do have a shop manual but it says it is a suplimental...does this mean it doesnt have all of the information that i need? I heard that i need a '63 manual that has what i need and the '64 supplimental gives me all of the stuff that changed for the '64 truck.
If you look in the engine bay below the steering shaft, you'll see where the clutch linkage comes out of the firewall. It's going to connect to a Z-bar, then on the lower portion of the Z-bar will be another rod which goes back to the clutch fork. On the end of the rod, by the clutch fork, there should be a nut that you can run back and forth on the rod to increase or decrease to preload on the throwout bearing.

Jason, Don't make adjustment with the engine running...too dangerous.Make an adjustment and try it.It'll probably take several attempts to get it where you want it. If you can get a copy of the '63 manual, I would do so. Also, I responded to your email.
