I have a 250 with a clifford intake and header with a small cam and duel point, the motor make noise like it has bad lifters.. I just put in a new set of Chevy HD's and the noise is still there.I doesn't smoke but it does go through oil at about a quart every 400 miles. Do bad rings make this kind of noise? or does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be the source of my noise.
Thanks for the help

I would first make sure the valves are lashed correctly, run the engine and if its still noisey do a cylinder compression check. That will tell you if any internals such as valves or rings are damaged.

Do what Drew said. You might have a worn cam from initial overtightening of the valves. If that's the case the only remedy, of course, is to replace the cam and lifters. That's easier and less expensive than a ring job (which could easily become a bottom end rebuild).

could be piston slap also-the oil consumption is an indicator mabeye, also loose wristpin will do that, does it get quieter when fully warmed up?
