How many blades did these have? Does anyone know where I can pick one up? I haven't seen too many 292s at the junkyard.

hey 63, i have a bent 1 but i'll check the #'s 4 ya and let
ya know tomorrow how's yours been going?

I've got a couple of extras send me a PM with addy and I'll get it off to you. They are 4 blades. I've got a 3 blade with clutch they are kind of scarce. There is only about a 1/2 inch clearance on my 63 C20 between the fan and rad.. a little too close for me.

Larry, how many rows in your radiator? I can already tell it's going to close with my 292 sitting in the frame, there's hardly any room between the harmonic balancer and radiator mounts. It would be great if some could post some pictures. Is there room to mount electric fans? I was thinking of going electric.

Thanks Larry. Do you think you could take a pic for me before sending one? It might give me an idea if I'll actually be able to use it.

I'm surprised they isn't much room on the c-20. On my 1970 c-10, there was a huge spacer to get the fan close enough to the radiator.

Let me what I can do for pics tomorrow. I've some running around to do in the morn. This afternoon it was 99 in the shade.

Heater is this in your truck?

hey 63 the 1 i have is a 7 blade

There are no 6 cylinder fans, no specific size, number of blades, pitch angle, blah.
You can use anything that fits, any brand, more blades move more air.
There are a few dimensions that have to match:
1. OD fits the shroud, about 1/2 to 3/4" smaller if centered in the opening (and it should be)
2. center hole fits the hub
3. bolt pattern

Don't use an electric fan unless there's nothing else that works.

basically what the guy that is helping me out told me. i see a trip to the pick & pull in my future

If you can find one, the viscous clutch type (big die-cast hub with small fins) uses less power at speed. Any offset (irregular spaced blade) fan is quieter than straight blade. Inspect carefully for radiator scars (shiny scrape marks on the blade or radiator core), bent blades, Vise-Grip marks, any repairs, or dirt on only 1 blade.
To tell if it still works: the fan blades should rotate against the hub with some resistance. If it free-wheels, or doesn't rotate at all, it's toast.

hey 63, from what i'm picking up on ur post is now
u may want 2 go the mech fan route instead of the elec
mode? if so i did the 6 thin blade w/3core rad w/a modified
core support at the bottom by cutting out about 1" and the top
is a 1.5 x 1.5 steel bar for the top support w/2 vertical bars from the frame up and a support 4 the bottom of the rad w/rubber insulators. i'll take pics 2nite 4 ya tomorrow. some of the pics show some of the ideas i did http://s42.photobucket.com/home/6pac2go
the rad pic is from a earlier misshap 2 yrs ago and had fixed.

Are you using the 3 core HD radiator like this:

my original is like this one (notice the wide brackets):

I was hoping there might be enough space to run the top radiator and a mechanical fan with a stock core support.

If I can't do this, I'll just run the aluminum radiator, with the 2 electric fans I already bought.

63ChevyII, Here are the photos of the clutch fan. Unfortunately the batteries in the went dead just as I got started. I'll try and replace these tomorrow.

Heater63, I have a 3 core radiator.

hey 63 the rad i'm using is a crossflow 21" core when get chance 2 day i post the pics 4 ya

also r u talking about a fan 4 the 63 or the tr c10/20 u talked about also?
Posted By: 63ChevyII Re: Stock 292 mechanical fan - 06/30/10 02:14 PM
Larry - thanks for the pics. I'm thinking you can hold off on taking the other ones if you want. If you could just measure the diameter of the fans, that would be helpful though. Are all the fans you have clutch fans? I'm 99% sure I don't have room enough to run one of those.

6pac -
I have a 2 core crosswflow aluminum universal rad from summit. I also bought some nice brackets for mounting (http://home.earthlink.net/~2drcdan/id1.html). Another guy with an L6 has used this radiator and mounts with a mechanical fan with no problems. Problem is, he was using a 250 and from what I can tell, the waterpump snout on my 292 sticks out further. I'm guessing it sticks out further so the the fan can clear the larger harmonic balancer. There is no way I can use a mechanical fan with this radiator. There isn't even enough room in there for two 10" electrical fans, so I bought two 8" fans (rated at 2200cfm each, IIRC). I was planning on making a shroud for the fans and upon further inspection, it looks as though I will need to bolt everything up to the core support (rad, shroud, fans), then put the core support in the car. Which means, if the radiator or fans need to come out in the future, I'll need to pull the grill and everything else out. I'd like to avoid this if possible.
If possible, I'd like to buy the HD L6 Nova radiator above and use a mechanical fan. I know the HD L6 Rad will give me more clearance, but not sure if it will be enough for a mechanical fan. I'm a little upset since I already bought the aluminum radiator and can't return it...

I replaced my 65 292 water pump with a 78 292 water pump and the pulley sat about 5/8" further back. It was like 25 bucks. That might help.

I'm not sure if this makes sense or not, but I tried a later 292 pump. The propeller was contacting with something inside the engine when I turned it (maybe the wall of cylinder #1). I returned the pump to rock auto for an earlier one and this didn't happen anymore. I suppose it could have been a faulty pump.

63ChevyII, The diameter on the fans is 19" for the 4 blade(factory), and 19 1/8" for the clutch fan. I thought I had 2 of the 4 blade fans, but I could only find one. Of course it's the worse for rust. It's swimming and under going shock treatment for the rust. If you want it you can have it.

No mine did that too I wacked the shaft with a big hammer a couple times (not good engineering practice) to "press" the shaft and impeller forward slightly. Double gasketing would probably be safer. Or getting your local machine shop to press it 1/8" or so.
