HELP!!!

Hello, I am new to the board. I am rebuilding a '52 Chevy 3100 PU. Last night I picked up what I am sure is a 292. The engine mounts are off set with the LH one being pretty much centerd on the block and the RH one set more towards the front of the block in front of the fuel pump. I have checked the casting #'s page in the index but cannot find the number of my block listed (exactly). If I assume correctlly, placing it in a numerical order of sorts, I beleive it is a 75-84 engine. The casting number I have is 93411147. Any input will be greatly apprciated.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!!

If it has 'waffles' cast into the sides of the block it would be a late Mexican casting, another clue would be 'Heco en Mexico" :). It could be as late as the early '90s. look for a date code eg: D 24 2 (letter=month, next 1or2 numerals=date, last numeral=year). Let us know what you determine.

Here is what I have so far. If the date code is located elswhere, where would that be?

Hi Greg . . .

None of casting number lists I know of online go up that high. So I googled it - and came across a blog where someone is writing about a 292 transplant into a '49 Chevy Styleline that describes it as a Mexican casting circa '86.

This is at least logical because the sequence is higher then any of the castings documented online:
93403466 Chevrolet 75-83 250
93403467 Chevrolet 75-84 292
93406004 Chevrolet 75-84 292
both here and at Znet or ChevelleBB
though I am not sure why it would jump from 93406 to 93411 in just two years - (unless there was some sort of design/sourcing change).

The blogger seems pretty high on this particular block - praising the casting quality.

regards,

Wouldn't the '4.8' cast in the block imply that the displacement is 4.8 L, or 292 ci? Also, aren't the lifter side covers taller on the 292 than on other GM sixes? GM experts can chime in here - I'm a FoMoCo guy mostly.

some folks put a lot of faith in these casting numbers, and the stamped numbers on various engines. While the stamping number should be a pretty good indicator, it too is too general to be a last word.
I have looked up many chevy engine numbers on engines that I have bought out of an engine pile at a bone yard not knowing what they came out of. My present 292 which, I was told, came out of an '80 4X4 pickup has casting/stamping numbers just wont back that up. The numbers are just too general. I have not seen many 292 engines and my only means of identification is to look for the tall side plates, and if i can remember, the fuel pump/motor mount placement.
MY 292's block number is 3921970 which makes it a 1963 thru 1990 (according to leo's book) that really pinpoints it-right only a 27 year spread? Further, the date code is F248 meaning it was cast on June 24, 1968, or 78, or 88 now that hones it down to only a 20 year spread. The stamped FO711BG tells me on July 11 of some year at the flint engine plant is when and where these numbers were stamped on that pad. I have not taken off any pans or other sheetmetal, so I cant testify as to any timing gear oiling methods, or etc to maybe confirm or narrow down to which decade this engine belongs.
As FF said the 4.8 is probably a good bet that it is a 292, as is the motor mount locations. But good luck on which year. Any educated guesses on mine? or if it really came out of a '80 pickup hmmmm maybe it came out of a COMBINE.
