I just bought a Chevy 6 (my first in 30 years) for an old school hot rod project .

I'm sure it isn't a 292 but not sure if it is a 230 or a 250 . How can I be sure ?

Thx,
Gonzo
Post the casting number off the block.
Thx Drew . Here are the numbers.

3921968

Further to the right of that number is GM - an M in a box - a 6 and an X

Thx ,
Gonzo
Pull the plugs If you see a dish in the piston then it is a 250 As long as it has not been rebuilt with a flat top. The 230 has flat tops / NO dish. The block casting Number can show it as a 230 Or 250 Your # shows beeing Chevy/Olds 64-76 230/250 Block.
Thx Larry ,

Honestly I'm hoping for a 250 . I'm building a fenderless 50 Chevy truck with a bobbed bed etc . I plan to run a Powergluide and make an occassional pass thry the 1/4 mile .

If it's a 230 , are there "Go Fast" items available ?

It's been probably 30years since I've played with hot rods . Ahhhh , the wheel is round .

Thx
Gonzo
Yes the 230 Go Fast Goodies are the same that of the 250.Only difference is pistons. @50 dished Unless after market Then you can have flat tops.(307s) 230 block can use the 283 pistons.
Thx T
