A nice new Weber or something. What would that be like? Just wondering out loud. I'm not interested in high performance with this motor, it's just basically stock, but with a little bit of cam and headers. Would a 2bbl offer any better economy than a 4? I know I'm not going to get very good mileage, but every little bit helps. I am at altitude, too, with most of my driving between 4 & 6 thousand feet. Any thoughts?
if you bore a 283 chevy V8 out .060", you get 292 cubes, so you could feasible use anything the factory used on their 283s. Use this line of thought when selecting a carb size for the 292 six. As a bonus, the six, with its longer stroke, should be able to handle a bigger carb at low rpms than the 283. 2GC and 4GC Rochesters, WCFB Carters, etc. should work fine. Mercruiser used some 292 sixes and they used Quadra-Jets on them.

more pronounced intake pulses seem to be better at drawing fuel from carbs. more pronounced "draws" caused by less frequent and sharper "draws" from an equal sized but fewer cylindered engine will enable better slow speed performance from a carb, which is where a larger carb is usually faulty (phillip smith's discussion of the tri-carbed Bristol six with its differently jetted carbs).
Same principles, in reverse, apply to turbos. more spin from less smooth exhaust pulses than from smooth steady pulses. I believe these ideas (or perhaps creative thinking)was basically taken from one of Hugh MacInnes turbo books, or maybe from Phillip Smiths Intake/exhaust book. Thats my take.
How is that related to stroke?
Are you buying everything but the stroke?
Then I'll trade the stroke statement for fewer (but larger-due mostly to stroke) cylinders.
2 barrel TBI, driven by something like megasquirt with a wide band O2 for best tuning and economy.
Thanks for some food for thought, guys. I seriously can't decide which way to go. I've been advised that fuel injection is not worth the money for what I want from this particular motor. I think I will go with a 2bbl. Call it a compromise between a stock 1bbl and a 4bbl. What the heck, I'll either like it or not, and if not I can always change to something else.
