What problems will I run into putting a 250 into a 1963 chevy 2.The dipstick appears to be a problem. I can use the 193 pan and pump can't I?? Any ideas on what to do to have a dipstick?? Any advice will be accepted except telling me I can't do it. 1 OL REDNECK

Redneck- You can't do it.

There should be a pad on the block in the same location as the 194 has for the dipstick. Just drill it and install the dipstick from the 194.

I have extra pan and pump for the 194 setup if needed.

popper6 PM sent

If you do not Have PS you can just dimple the oil pan Or notch it to clear the drag link. I have done Both to many rear sump pans and Never had any issues.

Hey Larry...that type of pan will go under a 292 also..? What about our chevy2 hoods with a 292..

Gary has run 292's under the stock hoods. He also used the 250 oil pans on them. just change the pick-up tube.

Ditto here, 292 in 63 Nova, stock hood shuts.
Plenty of clearance with either stock 1bbl or 4bbl Clifford with a flat/skijump base 14x2 air filter. 14x3 will hit the hood though.
A 292 does fit, but there is not much room for a large conventional air cleaner. The kind needed to get the airflow the engine needs.

A short pancake air filter squeezed between the carb & hood is OK, if you do not want to make a lot of power.
That size small filter does not look good either.

Never mind

Hank, Panic -
No need to get fancy, what I'm saying is, the standard "v8 style" 14" x 2" air cleaner fits right on there. The bottom is about 1/2" above the valve cover so it clears just fine. The stud on mine would take about a 2-1/2" filter so that might work too, although I do remember trying a 3" filter and the lid hits the hood.

But a 14x2 round is enough air for maybe 230-240hp anyway, probably could even use it up to 300hp or so without losing even a fenderlength.

mmm? I am running a k&n pancake type filter off a subaru wrx or imprezza type setup, wonder if that's enough for a 292

That's also why they make cowl induction hoods.

Probably not.

Depends how big the air inlet is & how many square inches is the filter?

Got any more pics of the air cleaner assembly?

What is the HP rating of the engine it came off of? If it was as much as the HP you plan to put out with the 292, I would think it would work. Unless there is a drastic difference in volumetric efficiency, to create the same HP they would need the same air.

Know what I mean?

Fingersix,
Cool air cleaner (and decal)!
Almost looks like the old Hudson Twin-H power.
My rule-of-thumb is, use 1" of filter for each 100hp gross.
That's on a 14" round air cleaner.
Its a little more complex but that rule is easy to remember.
Obviously you can get away with less, as the factory often did, but it starts hurting with less than that.
So 1"x14"round = pi*14" or about 43 sq in of filter area per 100hp.
And of course it depends on how efficient the filter is too.
The Cool Factor of yours has to add a few horsepower anyway!

the air cleaner assembly is from a 5.0 out of a first gen (70')bronco,,so the throat and neck I thought would be plenty for the six,the full radius you see was the diameter of the element that hung below the base beside the v8's valve cover, imagine the carb in the middle, the pancake flat filter i have fitted up in the housing was for a wrx,, those crazy cars were faster than belief, i thought that would be plenty of air and with the k & n product to flow more,,, as I research now, those cars created anywhere 200-256 hp all over the board with a 2.5l, maybe I am choking this 250 combo down,,mmmm?, I not at home now but that thing is about 12" dia,,,113 square inches,,it is cool looking but I have too much in that combo to choke it,,so a 14" dia 2" tall is 88" of surface,,mmmm?
popper6,, sorry for the hyjack,,lol

ok,, I see wrx sti numbers now in the 300 range,, I dont know what I have,, time to go home and look at the part numbers,, Ill try to take a pic of the bottom side too,,
The thing about most stock air cleaner assembly's is that they were made to be quiet, quiet usually means restrictive.

That is why most aftermarket companies jump on this fact & design there more efficient air cleaner assembly's.

The 292 would be considered a 5.0 also or close enough, so, it's not much smaller than a 5.0.

I really like that air cleaner. What kind of carb is on that engine? Jay 6155
