Caravaning to the convention - 09/14/17 06:19 PM

Several of us from the Midwest Chapter are going to travel together to the convention in Flagstaff along as much of old Route 66 as possible. We are planning to take 4 days to get there stopping to see some of the sites along the way. Depending if there are others from east of us who would like to join in we would hit Route 66 at either St Louis or Joplin MO. If you just "think" that you might want to travel with us please let me know as soon as possible. Would like to find places to stay along the way and would like to get a ballpark number so that we make some plans. Would love to hear from you.

When are you planning on rolling into Flagstaff? Also may have someone to join the caravan as you get to New Mexico.

We are planning to spend the night in Amarillo, TX on Friday July 7, and then July 8, in Albuquerque, NM. That will put us in Flagstaff on Sunday, July 9. As soon as we get a good idea how will want to meet up with us we will make reservation at Motels along the way. This is going to be GREAT fun. Hope to have a big caravan pulling into Flagstaff.

Re: Caravaning to the convention - 11/10/17 06:59 AM

I guess I should have started at the beginning. Our first night will be in St. Louis on July 4 to watch the firework by the Arch. Then the next night July 5 we will be staying in Tulsa, OK. Not sure which points of interest we will be stopping at along the way at this time. We are having a meet on Dec 3 to discuss that. If anybody has any suggestion please let me know so I can let the others know.

About 15 miles South of Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. It is the second largest Canyon in the US. I don't know what the charge is but maybe you could arrange a group rate. You can drive in and go in a few miles. It is a beautiful red dirt and juniper canyon with Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River running through it. It would probably take 3 or 4 hors to get back to Amarillo. Worth it I think but I'm prejudiced. Our ranch was on the south rim. There is a really neat old Deco gas station in Shamrock and of course the much abused Cadillac Ranch a few miles west of Amarillo. The Big Texan in Amarillo would be a fun food stop. A lot of little pieces of Route 66 remain in some of the small towns. There are the remnants of Glen Rio right on the border of Texas and New Mexico. Last time I was there there were a few tumbling down vintage motels and broken neon signs. The original alignment of 66 runs from there back to I40 at Sant Rosa. It is poorly marked and some of it a two track dirt road.At Moriarty on the south side of I40 there is a fenced yard with old cars. Some stacked several high. None for sale. The guy gleaned the whole area, a huge, area and stockpiled everything he could get. Earl's restaurant in Gallup is fun. Native American jewelry sellers walk among the tables while others have tables outside to sell their wares. Too much to see to list.

I will be driving from deep South Texas to pick my son up in San Antonio. He will be flying into San Antonio on the 5th. I think we might like to meet the "wagon train" in Amarillo and cruise on into Flagstaff with you guys.
