This past summer has been a real learning curve for us. The new turbo setup and data logging capabilities. The data logging was a pain to wire but a real asset to the setup. It will tell you what your car likes and dislikes. In our case it told us it did'nt like that little turbo. The exhaust housing was to small and could not exspell all the exahust gases. It made the motor surge from 600' to the end of the 1/4 mile. We pulled some boost out of if and went and tested and it really like it. It ran really smooth @ 10 psi. The only problem is it ran 9.80 seconds. That about put us to sleep so we had to fix that. You ask what is it? A full on race Garret 80mm part #4508R. Billet aluminum compressor wheel. This should give us a little power on the 6500-7500 rpm range. We were totaly floored when the new turbo dropped right into place. We were thinking a header rework was next on the list. Hopefully we will be up and running in no time.Our goal for many years was to run solid high 8 second passes. This turbo should give us good quailty boost @ 20-25 psi and be real reliable power.

The old turbo is a 78mm mid-frame and the new one is a large frame.

The 79.8mm is measured on the inlet size of the wheel. While the major diameter of the wheel is 108mm. Hope this clears it up a bit.

It was like a fuel surge. You could really see it on the data log. Makes us think that the exhaust is backing up into the motor. Pull boost out (back pressure) of it and the problem goes away. Runs fine on the chassis dyno for short burst.
19 psi of boost = 52 psi on the exhaust.
egt 1500+ @ turbo.
A/F not sure at his time.
6000-6500 rpms
We did not what to spend the cash for a Race Pak. A freind told us about RPM
Performance data loggers. They work great and they are half the price of a
Race Pak setup.

No it's a T4 still. The diffrence is the Turbonetics turbine had a 76mm wheel and the Garret has a 87mm wheel. The nozzle area look really opened up in the Garret. The Turbonetics had a 3" down pipe vs 4" on the Garret.
We shared our data log from all the runs. The engineer recommended this turbo to us.
BTW- This guy does a ton of Toyota 2jz and fz stuff.

Yes the tank is in the rear. It has to come to the very front of the truck and make a 3' clime to the fuel rail.
At first I thought that's what it might be. It has a new 1100 HP Magnafuel pump on it. So blew that theroy off. I will do some checkinng on it. I can upgrade it to a 1500 hp unit for $100. What a bargain

5.92 @ 112 mph with Sissell head and 300hp shot. No 1/4 mile passes were done with this combo. We are sure it would go 9.50s with no problems. The one thing I would do diffrent here is use carbs vs EFI.
I bought me some new reading material for the cold winter nights. It is the newest release from SA Design. It has some good stuff in it.
We made a little progress on the peekup. The new front axle is in place for the 140+mph blast. The turbo pluming is all most done.

1) It's cheaper
2) Way less complicated
3) The fuel jetting way diffrent than what carb guys use.
4) No chassis dyno time.
5) We never hurt any parts with carbs.
Now, if a person was spraying 100 hp...no problem. Step up and throw in 300-400 hp there going to be trouble with EFI.

My Camaro was scary fast when I just used a NOS cheater plate w/the smallest jets 150-175 HP.(kit was designed for an engine no smaller than 350 CI,mine was 250 CI )In fact, IIRC, it stated DO NOT USE ON ANYTHING SMALLER THAN 350 CI, Wanting the best bang for the buck & I wanted to go as fast as possible,,I thought to myself,,what's a 100 cubic inches less? LOL I never went to a track, but I would guess easy low 11's to high 10's if I could get it to run a full pass.
Never really got it to work correctly for a full pass,(detonating, the instant I hit the button)but I stilled stayed into it it was such a rush I did not want it to end.
During the intial NOS purging the first time I hit it (nitrous button)in park,brought the RPM to approx 2000 RPM, hit the button to purge & it went to 5000 RPM w/out moving the throttle.
My friend thought I hit the gas pedal as I purged the nitrous @ the same time LOL.
I don't know if any of you have run your engines w/out a torque converter (just a flex plate)& reved it up,,, well let me tell you,it reved just as fast & violent w/the nitrous.!

I just want to let everyone know what our goal is here. 1) Craig and I are plannig a conservative route. We are going shoot for 850ish rwhp and 20-25 psi of boost. The reason for this is we want a 8.99 et or better pass. A new personal best is more inportant to us than BIG horsepower numbers. Taking a chance on blowing it up.
2) We have a chassis dyno sponsorship so getting back on the dyno is not a problem. It is a pain to take off work and drive 2hr's one way. Still way cooler than being at work.
3) The connecting rods are designed for 1200 horsepower. We have a ton of runs on them. We will upgrade to a 1500 horsepower rod when we freshen up the motor soon. At this time we will inspect the factory main caps and determine weather a stud gridle is needed at this time.
4) After we do all that we'll turn it up and see what we got

After a full day on the chassis dyno I have the results. We left the boost the same at 21psi to see what the gain is. It went from 717 rwhp @ 6200 rpm to 849rwhp @ 6620 rpm. With NO other changes. The torque fell of a bit from 813 to 777 rwtq. This thing spools like crasy
At 21psi of boost we ended up with 31 psi of exhaust pressure. 20psi less than the old turbo. It is a beast! There is way more HP left in it.....1000+RWHP with more boost....no problem.
The down side is we ran out of fuel pump as Turbo-6 mentioned in earlier post. It was a combanation of things that led to this. We run VP Q16 fuel which makes the motor want 5-10% more fuel than standard fuel systems.
The truck is still at the dyno shop. We are over nighting a fuel pump from Jegs to install tommorrow morning. We will finish the dyno session tommorrow.Video link

We are done
I think we made 20 plus pulls over the two day period. We ended up with 857rwhp and 800rwtq. We would have liked a few more ponies. We are more than happy with the out come. The new fuel pump didnt really give us very much over all. It just made the tune up very safe. We could lean out the tune and make 870rwhp and the torque would fall way off. So, we decided to go the safe route instead.
We have a video of the pull and I will post them later.

I bounced it off the 7000 rpm rev limiter more than once
If there is harmonic issues with the 292 at 6500rpm we didnt see it.
Max tq rpm was 4400 I think. I dont have the paper work in front of me. I will have to see on the timing. Not sure what it ended up being.

Yes I have smelt it, does not smell good @ all.
I tried it in my Syclone & it leaned out my A/F ratio last time @ a track 13.8 , I was running out of injector,since then I installed larger injectors but have not gone to the track yet.

We are still a bit numb by the preformance of M6. A few racers were giggling when we brought M6 to the line. After that first shake down pass they knew we were there to run some numbers. It was funny because they would come back to watch every time.

We are just now getting our transmission back from the rebuilder. We were trying to make a race this weekend. The XS Power 16v battery decides to short out
So instead of over nighting a battery from across the USA we decided to scrap the race. We decided to look at everything real good to make sure the next outing is a good one like the first one.

I have been working a ton of hours 80 hrs a week.
No, we did a leak down and found 5 cylinders had 15, 15, 30, 30 and 60% leakdown. It also had a small water leak around the head gasket. We pulled the motor out to address the issues. The water leak was the head gasket. The leak down was the exhaust valves were corroded from the fuel we use. We think it had that much leak down when we made the 8.71,.75,.79 passes.
With Craig and I working so many hours it may take a few more days to get it back together again. Our record setting weather is gone in S. Texas so no point in getting in a hurry now.
We put the o-rings in the ex-ports a long time ago for the nitrous motor. It worked good but still had gasket issues. We do not use any gaskets now. A small dab of high temp silcone to seal it up.
Yes, M. Kirby has some gaskets in stock.
We run a copper head gasket with o-ring and rec-groove has held up well for us. Mike has a new Cometic head gasket that look trick. We are going to try it next.

I heard about that Q16 being really corrosive..
I heard also not to leave the Q16 in the fuel tank either.
A VP rep on another forum says if the vehicle is going to sit for more than a week, you should drain all of your fuel system.
I think mainly to get the fuel preserved of its octane.

Another rough week at work
If I dont respond It's because I get home really late and my brain is fried.
I know a bunch of guys running that fuel and this the first time I've seen this problem.

I think the turbo will work well. What A/R on the ehaust 1.01? What rpm's are you going to spin it too?

Yes, we pulled the pan off. Eveything looked real good. We also had to look and see where the con rod comes close to the cam. We may need to add some material to next set of rods.

Is there a need for a main gridle for 1000hp? I would say NO if the main caps are doweled. But whoo knows ho much power one of these blocks can handle. I'm sure if we decide to step up ( 1300hp )we will do something to the bottom end. We have a few things in mind but were not sure which way to go yet.

1.5 and 2" sch 10 316ss el's from McMaster Carr. The 1.5 actully measure 1.625 on the i.d.
We went racing this weekend. Our local track had a "all out" race similar to the Pinks all out deal. We backed our truck down to a 9.50 (10psi of boost) was as slow as we could go. We did'nt make the show. So decided to make a test-n-tune pass. We turned the boost controller up to 17psi boost. We wanted to see if we could duplicate the 8.79 pass we made with great track conditions. It went 8.82 @ 150mph. It was hot and windy so to be able to run with in .03 was a good feeling.
After seeing a ton of 69 camaros and fox body stangs. The crowd really responded after seeing a 70+yr old truck make a 8 second pass. It's up in the air when our next outing will be.

OK let me see if I can explain this better.
Our best pass to date is a 8.71 at 19psi manifold pressure.
Our second best pass is a 8.79 at 17psi manifold pressure.
The pressure in the manifold is 2 pounds less than in the boost pipes.
No, It's not tuned for 25psi. We need to put some better rods in the motor before we try that. We have so many things we would like to try before we push the motor harder!
We are not even pushing it hard at the 60' mark. There is some tuning left to do there.

No, Craig and I are working some long hours. It way to hot to race in Texas right now. We want to save our equipment to the weather cools off. There are a couple heads up races in Sept. and Oct. that we want to run.
Right now we are refining a few things. Trying to get the brakes to work better for staging. You have to stage with so much brake pressure and then they don't want to release so they drag. Maybe cover the grill to help with the aerodynamics
. All kinds of stuff like that. I'm not sure any if of it will work. Sometimes you just have to try to see if it will. Maybe throw some 275x60 M/T Drag Radials on it. It should be faster in the cooler months.
I understand,when the weather is hot, turbo cars will not perform, well, for the most part anyways.
Dont work too hard & too long,, life can be short.
Even w/a trans brake you need a lot of break pressure?

I just like to take it easy in the summer months. Being a welder by trade I like to soak up some BTU's on the weekend if I can
. Once the cool weather hit's I will be ready to go every weekend if I can.
We have two rev limiters that we use. One is set at 3500rpm. I apply a ton of brake pressure to reach the 3500 rpms. I slowly bump in and set the trans break. This will allow it to jump up to the next rev limiter at 4500-4800 rpms. This helps us control our wheel speed at the hit. The Coan convertor is really tight so it's a little tuff to stage. Now on the other end of the track we have 5-7% slippage. So it is a give and take deal.
Soo, is the Typhoon still all wheel drive?
We can not wait till the one in Oct. It is big race with ink in most heads up magazine's. Maybe we will get lucky and get some ink for being diffrent.
The Typhoon is 2wd. I think it ran 8.8 in the 1/4 & not even dialed in, 1st time & only time @ a track w/his 1204 HP V-6 engine.
He has sold the engine a long time ago & he has family & his business to take care of, so the Typoon is set aside.

Sorry to hear that. It's going to be a hell of good time. We don't have enough hot rod for those boys but a race is a race. Being is 1/8 mile race were going to get after our tuneup a little harder

That was a 4.3 but, I believe it was 5.0 V-6 Bowtie block stroker crank etc.

And yea we did!It was a blast showing the heads up crowd a diffrent kind of race car.
We qal 16th in our class out of 22 entries. We lost in the first round of elemanations. Ran a personal best of 5.506 @ 128.56 mph in the 1/8 mile. This was on 275 M/T Drag radials and NO wheelie bars!

We are running 23psi of boost. We are just bringing in the boost ramp real aggressive.

Yes we are running a crank trigger. It has worked perfect every time. We started running it because our timing was not real steady with the nitrous motor. Rock solid timing on a nitrous motor is a must!
We would like to see what 30-35 psi of boost would do!
We need to pu a fresh set of rods in the motor for that. It turns 7100rpm + at the 1/8 mile alone and 7600+ at the 1/4.

I rememberd today why we should'nt just throw more boost to it. The rods we are running were designed for 1100 hp. We are loooking to get a set of rods for 13-1400hp in the future.

After working a ton of hours last year. We are starting to get the racing bug again. Here is the short version of the race last year. We getting geared up to go again. The first few runs we were going easy on the tuneup. The video guy did not get the best pass of 5.50 @ 128mph but it is still fun to watch.

Yeah, some of those wheels up launches looked like it could have turned into "rubber side up" fairly easily.
Does give credence to a straight 6 as a drag race engine though.

The radial tire is so much more predictable than a slick so you can push it a little closer to the limit.
Our torque convertor is off at Coan getting a upgrade for this setup (turbo). The convertor was not optimum for this setup because it was built for a nitrous motor.
We are going to remove some weight because it is 270 lbs heavy for the class. We think a 100# will come off pretty easy. The other 170# will be pretty expensive so it has to wait for another day.

Yes, turbo cars make so much more torque. 30%@ 1/8 and 11-13% slip at the 1/4 mile causing it to build a lot of heat in the transmission. You could not put a bunch of power to it without overheating the transmission. Coan claims the reworked convertor will be 4-5% max. Which is ideal for our setup.
We can weight 2700lbs when we race in Ga. Some other classes we need to weight in at 2850lbs.
We made it out to the track for the first time this year. The convertor upgrade proveded to be the "hot" ticket. Our slippage went from 16% down to 5% on the 1/4 mile. This our new personal best and we backed it up. This is on 275 m/t drag radials. And............yes the data shows there is more left in it

We did not put any more boost to it. The same 22psi we have been
running for the last few races. The convertor was 80% of the performance gain.
We are not over heating the transmission fluid anymore. We covered the grill to keep the air out.
Put the wheelie bars on. Added the "bull horn" exhaust to keep the front down. We are learning how to use the power we have.

It was a 3800 rpm stall behind our nitrous motor. Coan pulled 500 rpm of stall out of it. So that would make it a 3300 stall but we can foot brake it to 3500 rpms. The trans brake rev limiter is set at 4500 rpms to launch. What works for us will probably not work for anyone else.

On my Syclone, normally my torque converter brake stalls to 2100-2200 RPM.
I was doing some datalogging w/my Syclone & was really surprized on how much my stock converter actually brake stalled to.
At 19 PSi, the engine RPM was @ 3025.
Converter is just as tight as ever, I guess having an engine making 560 ft lbs of torque is going to make something give.
In this case, the converter was doing the giving.
My poor old stock original 700R4 is past it's limits. But it's still hanging in there, don't know for how long though.

We are going to try and get the 60' down pretty soon. We feel like the racing surface is the limiting factor not the tire.
It's been a long time sence I posted any thing so I thought I would share video from this weekend. It was the LS1 truck shootout. There was a "fastest truck on the property" class. So we ended up racing the fastest LS truck at the event in the final for the win! The track was a bit marginal at best compared to what we are used to racing on. No, 8.40s was all we could get out of it. We think in perfect conditions we can run .20s but there again "perfect conditions".
One person told us "just turn up the boost"! Well if we were runnning 11-12s that would work but low 8s is not the same.

Were staying at 21-22psi. At this event we only running 19psi. With so many events going 1/8 mile its hard to find a 1/4 mile track that's good. They run all the street cars down them and the surface is cr-p!

We had it as light as 2850lbs but it will not go down a bad track at that weight. Its at 3000lbs now with 150 extra lbs hanging at the rear.
We went to another local truck race this weekend. The black truck was the 8-9 sec bracket final. The s-10 was a lil grudge match to keep fans entertained while another class was lining up.
