anyway i want to build this engine for a turbo for street use .
any suggestions for what parts and where to get them.
all so what mods should be done to the cylinder head and who would be able to do this.
thanks norm
Find your casting number on your block and check it with the "casting #s" found in the list at the left of this page.
Do some searches here and find posts that fit your project. There is a lot of help and info here.
Buy a copy of Leo Santucci's book. It has all the stuff you need to know.
Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

Norm,

Just curious if your interested in a later model GM inline 6?

They came factory rated @ 275 HP.

A swap can be done for less than what you will spend on mods to theiron 6

Pull the plugs out IF?? this is still a stock motor The 230 will have flat tops in it.If it is a 250 You will see a dish in the piston top.

so ive been searching for a good used 4.2 and am finding them for 1200 to 1800 with no ecu, wire harness or transmission.
so i'm thinking this is going to cost more then reworking my original engine and putting a turbo on it.
unless you know where i can find everything i need
thanks norm
A few years back, a series of dyno tests were done on both a 292 and a 250. The 250 was also tested with a turbo. I can tell you that when you compare the 4200 vs. the 250/292 to get the same HP on a dollar for dollar basis, the 4200 is half the cost. Its much more expensive than you think to build the 250/292 engines.

well after a lengthy talk with tom lowe i have pretty much decided to build a pretty serious inline 230 .hopeing for 450 hp or more this will be going into my 1966 chevy short bed step side truck.
i will use the stock block and machined as necessary such as as bore and hone as needed deck block for 0 deck height. crankshaft will be turned or polished as need checked for straightness and shot peened and cyro dipped. after market rods, custom turbo pistons and custom turbo cam.all machine work on the above items will be done by me at the racec engine shop i work at part time. all cylinder head work will be done by tom lowe.intake will either be 4 bbl clifford with a custom csu blow thru carb or custom sheet metal intake with fuel injection with stand alone big stuff three ecu. headers unkown.
turbo charger will be either what tom suggest or a precsion turbo from from my sponsor of my drag car.turbosmart will be used for bov and wastegate a boost leash electronic boost controller will probally be intalled and a custom built innercooler will be built by chiesel raceing products
this engine project should be up and running by feb. updates and pics will follow with tear down starting in oct or nov.
thanks to the postes and private p/ms from members on here and sujesting the 4.2 and it was a tough decision between the two i just wanted something old school with a mix of new
and questions or problems seen here please feel free to comment
IMO, you should run a 250 crank in there instead of a 230 crank.

I would go with a turbo from Precision from your sponsor.

whats the advantage of the 250 crank and where can i get one.
also what rods are available stock and after market.
i want to spin this engine 6200 to 6500 rpm hows the harmonics of the engine with a 250 crank in it. i was told the rpm i want to run there wont be a problem with the rpm up to 7000.

R U kidding?
250 crank, more stroke, bigger engine = more power.

Stock rods, 194,230,250 engines.
Aftermarket rods, Crower & others. 6" rod would be preferred over a 5.7".

If you get a good harmonic damper you can even spin a 292 pretty high along w/better rods.

I normally would turn my 250 engine to 6500 & have gone to 7500 w/out any problems. I use a standard 300 HP 8" 350 SBC damper. But I would recommend something better than what I use.

I am going to use a Fisher damper next.

thanks for the reply. yes i know all about the more cubes the more power. i just didnt know about the harmonics of a bigger stroke in theses engines. even are 9000 to 10,000 rpm sbc go thru a transisition of harmonics at a certain rpm qand you dont want to keep the enginge at that rpm for long.

any ideas where i can pick up a nice 250 crank
Norm,
There are no forged cranks for the 250. They can be had from your local machine shop and ordered in with bearings for 150-175.

how much power will these cast cranks handle
I've heard of well over 1000 hp. I can't speak from experience but some on this forum could.
