Here's a really good build of a 4200 going into a 49 Chevy Coupe.

He has several videos documenting it.

Here's one going into a Checker Marathon. They're not real delicate in their procedure. Lot's of grinding and sawzall work.

I'm working on a '78 280z and HEAVILY considering a 4200 to swap in. Basic parts in concept would be the Atlas, a custom intake, exhaust, cams, etc. Shave the head to increase compression slightly (somewhere between 10.5-11:1), and mate it to a Supra 5 speed trans and some cheap LSD I can find.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Love the engine, but isn't it a bigger package?
Posted By: efi-diy Re: 4200 builds - 02/16/19 04:27 PM
Length wise its within 1/2" of a 250

Its as tall as a 292

its wider

It does fit into a AD truck without cutting the firewall with the stock intake installed.

Your going to need a hood bump - the engine is tall.

If your going to do this sign up for the flywheel buy now.

They are not commercially available.

Yes but I am not afraid of hacking stuff up and modifying frames.

I think I'm going to just completely cut out the stock cowl on the hood of the Z, and have the valve cover sticking out the top (or completely flush if possible.

No personal experience, but IIRC the 4200 oil pan selections are slim and cause interference in many vehicles (center link, steering).
Have you done a mock-up?

For ready to go oil pans 2 choices:

stock or aftermarket rear sump

looking in: parts

I haven't even got an engine yet. I've been doing a ton of research first. Not to mention, the whole front end of the car most likely is going to get a tube frame anyway, so I'd be designing one custom regardless.

I'm not afraid of making a custom oil pan, and in fact this is going to be a high G handling car, so I'll probably end up with a dry sump anyways.
