In need of some info. I want to run my Chevy 235 with a th400 trans. I was told that the later years (54 and later) would except this tranny. Is this true or will I have to buy the adapter. I'm getting ready to build my motor, but wanted to check on this first, just in case. Mine is a 1954 235 out of a Corvette, supposedly has 140hp. Thanxs in advance for all the help.

This is not a good idea, but can be done.

The 235s are basically 100hp. It's going to take 20 of that to run the converter, leaving you 80+/- to pull around a 3,000# (plus) vehicle.

The cost of all that conversion to get that result "isn't worth it" in Dollars either.

Wish I had better news.

PS: The T-5 with a 4:11 rear is a popular choice and can be done at a 'reasonable' cost.

It will work well for your application too.

I guess I'm stuck with a T-5 then. Thanxs for the input all.

If you have converted to open driveline, you could use the three speed with overdrive from a 55 up and retain your column shift. Your options are limited with torque tube driveline.

I have already gotten rid of the torque tube driveline. Does this help.

Yes, that's the first step.

The 3spd with OD is a great idea too. You will need a 55-62 bell housing as well.

Are you sure you understand what's involved here??
