Hi. I haven't posted for a while. I finished my truck in June and have driven it about 1500 miles. It has the original 261 installed w/ the sm420. I did change the rear to a 3.38. I'm considering changing the trans to something else with an OD. I have even thought about an auto like the 200-4r. But the question is, I have heard the A833 will be a direct bolt up. Is this true? or am I better off with the t5? Thanks for the help, the advice is always good.
the t5 has better gear choices, the a833 is tougher. both have some problems putting in. maybe the a833 is easier. tom
The A833 is not a direct bolt up. The bell housing will have to be opened up for the input bearing retainer. I don't remember the diameter, same as a sm465 though. 8-[

Thanks for the answers. Is opening up the bell housing the only issue? Will the the trans have to be supported at the rear? Is the t5 or for that matter a 2004r an easier swap? I plan on getting a second trans cover and stick to modify/adapt it to the new trans. What is the best 1st and OD for the truck with a 261 and 3.38 rear?
a trans with a 1st gear around 2.5 would be a good choice. any od gear is good. the a833 1st is 3.06 and od is .72? tom
Is the Mopar A833 pattern the same as some of the Chevrolet Truck bellhousings? If so what years were they used? I was given an A 833 removed from I think an 1974 Dodge truck, it has the shifter which appears to be Hurst and looks healthy.All linkages intact and came with clutch, pressure plate,bell housing and etc. from Dodge. Any suggestions on its use behind 235 or 261 or 292 for that matter?
The answer to the first question no, but there maybe a very rare exception. Chevy used the A833 (MY6?) from 82 to 86 and it used the Chevy bolt pattern. I have one that I intend to put in my 63 C20 when the rebuilt 292 goes in. I had a link with some good info, but it's on my retired computer. There have several post on it, so if you do a search you should be able to find it. I've read first gear is suppose to be fairly tall so behind a 235 might depend on the rear axle ratio. Since you have all the parts to with it, it definitely worth pursuing. The shifter alone is a treasure, on yabe it will get a bill and a half. There is another on the board who is very knowledgeable. Thanks for the reply, Really crazy the way I got this transmission, was talking to the telephone man while he was making some repairs out side the house and he spotted the old 51 Chevy truck and told me he had an old transmission he had taken out of his old truck and I could have it. I told him I would come and get it he said he would bring it over and sure enough it was sitting in my driveway that evening when I got home! It is the OD one and has an large main shaft retainer, it appears to be in excellent condition and the reason I think it is 1974; is he left the radiator also and it is marked 74 ? I think it will be a good transmission for either my Chevys or early Mopars

The 833 as used in GM trucks has a 3.09 first and a 1.67 2nd.and OD is .73 ish.
This tranny when used originally in a Mopar is different than the GM version,much longer tail shaft,the input and putput splines are Mopar style.
Two types found in 80 GM trucks,one has the GM bolt pattern and splines,the other a Mopar bolt pattern with GM splines.Both are 21 inches long,same as most GM car stick trannys.
I turned down the front retainer to fit the bellhousing,it was easier than dragging the bellhousing to the machinist.
I have one MY6 or whatever made for GM diesels. Beware the "Hurst" shifter though, because it's not designed by Hurst, just made by Hurst - so they wear out quickly. I have one behind a V something or other engine, and it returns great mileage and the ratio spread seems fine.
