Dad's new to him B-Ville racer has a Powerglide in it.

As I understand it the early Powerglides had an extra or auxiliary pump in them so they could be flat towed and / or push started.

Does anyone know if this is true?

If it is, were there ever any aluminum case Powerglides with this feature?

If so, can you tell from the outside if it has one?

Thanks.

I have a 1961 shop manual that says the powerglide has a front pump and a rear pump. Also the turboglide has the same. I don't know if this relates to your question though. I could not find any info in the manaul about towing, etc. Sam

The rear pump I'm thinking of is driven off the main / tail shaft (not sure which term is correct for a Powerglide).

So at least I know some of them had 2 pumps.

Thank you.

Now, were they aluminum cases by '61?

I'll try and find the date code on the trans, that should help some.

All most all automatics had a rear pump in the 50s you could push start them if you got up around 30 to 35 mph, when the new generation autos (alum) came out rear pumps were gone. The rear pump helped hold the car back going down hill or anytime you let off the throtle, this helped with the small brakes of the time period. With power brakes it wasn't needed.

Hi,
My 63 Chevy Biscayne and my 64 Chevelle could both be rolled down a hill and started.
Both had original aluminum Powerglides as far as I know.

Does anyone recall where the 'rear' pump is physically mounted in the ones that had them? Would I be able to see it with the pan off? I figure I'm going to drop the pan at some point, but I want to keep the time it's off to a minimum, and prefer to do it once.

I have found lots of patent #'s (all in one area of the trans) and the 'Powerglide' was always visible (on the dipstick side of the trans).

But I haven't found the date code anywhere. Does anyone recall where it is? My luck it's inside the belhousing (since I have been looking elsewhere ;\) ).

I appreciate all the info, thank you all.

I believe '62 was the first year for the aluminium PG. The rear pump was used in these trans thru at least '66. In order to tell for sure if the trans has a rear pump you will need to remove the tailshaft housing, speedo gear, governor and governor support.
Behind the support you will find either a blue anodized plate or a gasket. The ones that use the gasket have no pump. Another way to tell is to drop the valve body and seperate the two halves and see if there are two check valves there. If there are the
trans has a rear pump. The check valves are spring loaded affairs that set in pockets in the valve body and are located
beside each other.

Sam, Gordy, I apprecitate it thank you both.

Gordy, I neglected to mention (ooops ) the factory extension housing isn't on the trans, it has a billet piece that supports the slip yoke. I expect this is to shorten the trans.

On that front, it has Reverse and Park locked out (per the rule book) and I believe it's set up as full manual. Not having driven it I couldn't tell you for sure though.

So is the pump located in the facory extension housing? I hope not.

Looks like the pump is inside the rear of the main housing and you get to it by taking off the extension housing. S

at my PG ,year -70 , this also could be "runstarted". At approx. 25-30 mph, it will turn the engine....
