Hey folks, I am looking to use an AX15 5 speed instead of a T5. It's stronger, but otherwise similar. Novak makes an adapter to mate this trans to a SBC. However, I have a 49 Fleetline (216) and will be swapping in a 56 235 out of a truck. I have the complete 1956 235 with bell and all (including foot starter).

Can anybody give me some idea- if this trans will bolt to a V8 with the Novak adapter, can I use it behind the 235 with either the 56 or 49 bell and the same adapter?? Novak provides instructions for modifying shaft length for the v8 - don't know if the 235 would be close to the same. Also not sure about the differences between the bearing in the 235/216 bell versus a V8 bell??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already have the AX15, and although it would require a $300 adapter - it would still be cheaper than buying a T5 and going that route. Plus, the AX15 is a stronger trans.
I know this much. A Saginaw 4 speed, a Chevy 3 speed and a Chevy 4 speed truck tranny have all been bolted to my '57 GMC 270 with no changes.. I think Chevy transmissions from '39 on are the same. There may be some clutch spline options and throwout bearing choices for lever or diaphragm style pressure plates. There is also a long and short in throw out bearings. But basically what works with your 235 will work with a trans that will bolt to a V8.

I don't see a problem with it. You might be an innovator.

I found this. Looks like a good idea to me

I found these links, may help out.

It'll work! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=621808
Great write up here. They are stouter than t5s and the electric speedos are interchangeable with common mechanical ones.

Might want to also consider the AR5 out of a Chevy Colorado. They are related to the AX15, use the same adapter, but you get triple-cone synchros and a GM output shaft.
