Looking at making a alum oil pan. I get so many calls for oil pans and do not have enough to supply.
A steel stamping is going to require a massive investment in tooling. Upwards of 100 K
A cast alum pans tooling also expensive but is far less.
The needs are for 2 different oil pans. One for 250 and another for 292. The 292 having a deeper sump.
With a alum pan features can be added for better performance.
- Larger capacity for oil
- Drain backs for turbo use
- internal baffling in sump
- Windage tray
- Better sealing

Considering the idea of 1 pan rail system and 2 different bolt on sumps depending on the application of 250 vs 292.

Thoughts? Additional features?

There are a lot of reasons why aluminum oil pans didn't last in the 60's any longer than they did. Steel would be a better choice! No need to invest heavily, there are still quite a few companies that make them in the performance industry for these engines.They would be glad to take your order for 20 or 30 at a time and private label them for you as well....Work smarter, not harder....! Just trying to save you some headaches and pulling your hair out....! Well, at least headaches, it's a little too late for the hair thing!LOL

Is there a large enough market for rear sump pans for the 153-181 four cylinders?

CNC DUDE- I can't find anyone that wants to make or does make a steel pan for these engines. Some companies will modify used units. Some will make fabbed alum units.
Have way too many requests for used/ good pans.

Beater, I do not get any requests for rear sump 153/181 pans. Those were made and used in OMC boats and fit the 2 piece rear seal engines. None that I know of for the 1 piece rear seal engines.

Morose, Milodon, Hambuger and a handful of circle track oil pan companies have made them in the past for many different production chassis combos and have all the tooling to still do it. If you place an order for 20 or 30 pans or more at a time, any of those should be happy to pull you up to the table and do business with you....

I agree, Decent 292 pans are a pain to find. But I have to think cnc-dude is right in the approach. If one of the pan manufacturer has the tooling, or can make it up out of what they already have, seems to be the better direction. If you are thinking of investigating this, and was wondering if anyone had any interest in a new performance steel street pan, I will be the first to say I am, and would prepay.

On the other hand, and in terms of aluminum, I would really rather see a Lowe 4bbl intake manifold, water heat ready, injection capable, then I would an aluminum pan.
