Hi there, guys!!

I bought a few month ago a street car (Chevrolet Opala SS 1978), and made it my Drag Car for now while the Yellow Turbocharged one is on fabrication.

Well...
The car have a Stock 250 cid rods (5.7" rods) and 4" stock pistons of the 151 Chevy 4 cyl engine!! Itīs a 4.400 liters engine. It have 15,5 compression ratio, stock cylinder head and 3 Webers carburetors 40mm. Itīs running on Methanol, No Nitro.
We made 373,5 HP on the wheels at the Dinamometer.

It was my first time on the track with this car, and on the second pass we made the regional record of the class in 1/8 mile, turning 8.0s with 0,119 reaction time.

The car class allows only street cars, fully mounted, without any boost devices (nitrous, Turbocharger, Supercharger and so), and the cars have to use only Brazilian Street tires with a maximum width of 205mm on the rear, and a minumum of 185mm on the front. No Battery relocation allowed, no Suspension modifications allowed! We have to put about 300 pounds of Sand on the trunk to get a little more traction...
**** rules!! :p

Here some pics and some vídeos of the car on the track:

NICE \:\) what cam are you running? But that is some great videos.
Thanks Larry!

Iīm using this Camshaft on that car.

Way to spank that car w/slicks Douglas!!!
Those are some nice summertime pics overthere!!

You are saying the engine is bored to a 4" bore?
You poured in some block (hard) filler?

Yeah that is a nice cam that is one i ran in my Old motor for over 17yrs. But I had the springs set up to Not have the valves floating at 7400
I have ran that set-up to 8000 many times and
Never ever had any problems from it.For that matter I still have that cam,and the lobes still
look great to this day.
The cam manufacture wants 11 - 12.5 to 1 compression,,you are just a tad over with 15 to 1 :-)
Time to install & hide a Nitrous sytem!!!!! Yes,no? ha ha ..

Wrong cam for NOS. i think? not enough lobe seperaton.(cam is to ruff?If i remember right it has a 109)Plus to much compression to start with?
That was a joke.
You can't run nitrous in the class Douglas is running in.
Yes you do need a wider lobe center.

That is a neat car Douglas!

Not to highjack the tread but.................

That cam will work for nitrous. You can spray 100-150hp easy. The problem is after 150 hp the gains are minimal form all the overlap in the cam. The plus side is that motors dont burn pistons. My old roller was 108 sep. and we sprayed 300 hp. Although we only gained 200hp with that jetting. Now we have a nitrous grind 112 lobe separation to work with EFI. I hope and that is the plan anyway \:\)
Amost any cam will work with nitrous.
But if you have a tight lobe center & a lot of valve overlap, you are just blowing nitrous right on through, past the exhaust valves, that is partially why you only saw a 200 HP gain when running 300 HP jets???

BTW, what EFI set up are you guys going to use?

Oh ok I just thought the lobe overlap/seperation
needed to be 112-114 for NOS.And wouldn't work to well with the 109.What about That much compression?
I always hear guys making comments about having to DeTune their motors to Run More NOS. Detune in what manner?
Less timing, usually less compression are two things to consider when using nitrous.
110-114 lobe centers are better for nitrous.

That is what I have always knew and thought. But
i was not 100% sure.Thanks
Can I run a 75 or 100 hp nitrous shot with a small Isky 270H 109 lc cam and stock rods, crank and pistons with 10:1 cr on gas?
I just thought to use a NOS 4-barrel plate with mine Holley 600 DP, but don't know if the engine will resist.
Thanks!
I would not run that big of jets.
Try it out with small jets like 20 HP & make sure to get your timing set correctly, less than stock.
And be safe & be on the rich side.
You really need to know what you are doing when it comes to nitrous.

Cast pistons will not take too much detonation before they blow apart!!

I ran the NOS "cheater system,4bbl plate & ran the smallest jets the kit came with 150-175 HP IIRC?
Man, it felt like 220 HP or so,but it was detonating like mad, luckily I had forged pistons, because if I had not forged pistons then,it would have granaided (SP) most of them.

I ended up using 75 HP jets it was still really fast.

For anyone thinking about running nitrous I'd suggest they buy David Vizard's book on the subject before they do anything else. I think the book is published by HP Books.

There are lots of drugs I haven't tried yet but, the best to date is nitrous. LOL

Thanks Hank!!
Itīs Summer here!! Time to go to the track and drink some beer also!! \:D

Yes! The engine is bored to 4". The car have no block filler. Engine block is stock!!!
No problems at all!!

Nitrous??? No no!!!!!
I want to run a few more races before blow up that engine... hehehe
Iīm always waiting for something when I put that engine to turn about 7.500 rpm! (like a pair of rods flying through the hood!!)

We have been using the FAST setup.

Did all the cylinders burn evenly with a plate?

That is a good book with great info.

Douglas, why is your windshield wipers up? Cheating aerodynamics advantage \:D \:D

When we donīt have too much engine to run, we have to appeal to things like that.... \:D \:D

Douglas, do you guys use a traction compound on the racing surface like we do here? Looks like you guys could benefit from it.
I kinda doubt the cylinders were all getting the same amount of fuel & nitrous.
But I had the engine apart(cyl head off) & the detonation marks on the pistons seemed pretty uniform/same.
I installed three fogger nozzels but never used them with my Paxton. Next time
VHT is the name of that compound??

We use in our cars a little bit in the launching area! Donīt know if it works like you guys, because you almost wash your track with that compound. Your tracks seems like a mirror!!!

And VHT here is really expensive!!
Douglas,
Nice car!
That looks a lot like a 1970's Opel Kadett they sold in the US.
Is it the same basic car?
Did the Opala come with the 250 Chevy in it?
Thanks.

Sweet car. Love that engine bay!!!!!

Douglas, as an alternative to VHT, PEPSI or COKE syrup works in a pinch LOL
Chevelle292Wagon:

The Brazilian Chevrolet Opala is a car based on the Opel Reckord. IIRC, the Opel Reckord was made in the 60īs years in Europe...

The Opala came with 4 types of engines:
- 151cid, 4 cylinders
- 153cid, 4 cylinders
- 230cid, 6 cylinders
- 250cid, 6 cylinders

The Opala SS Edition came with an engine called 250-S, with 171hp!!

82F-100:
Oh!! OK! Iīll try Coke on the next race!!
But it haver to be Light, ZERO, Diet or tradicional?? :p
Douglas,
how much HP does the inline 6 250 12 port 1997 Chevy truck engine make, torque also?
Thanks!

To run anything less than say 125hp in a 6cyl, the car will ET quicker with the 106-110 lsa cam. To hit it with 175hp and above, the wide cam will et quicker. Just like stated above, any more than that on the narrow cam and you blow it out the exhaust; any less than that on the wide cam and you lose more from the cam than you gain from the n20 you aren't blowing out.
Hank!

Here is a chart with all the mechanical specs of the 250 cid 4.1 SFI made here.

Itīs the last engine specs, on the right!

Douglas : You are remembering quite right.
The Opel was made in Germany between 1967 to 1971,it came in several ways regarding bodys.
There was :2d and 4d sedan 2 and 4 door stationwagon and then there was the 2 door hard top Coupe. The Rekord used a 1.9 liter 4 cyl @ 90 hp and there was also a model called Rekord Sprint thar had the same 1.9 liter but with 2 dual-port Weber carbs and a cam that was a little bit "bigger" @ approx 115 hp.And the body also came as a model called Commodore but it came in 2 body versions: 4d sedan and 2d Hard top Coupe, they had a 2.5 liter inline 6 the first years then the engine went to 2.8 liters
it used a single 2 port Solex (115 hp)but a step up model called GS had dual Webers (aprox 140 hp)and finally there was a model called GS/E that had EFI (155 hp)The engines responded very well to modifications and hp figures around 250 hp was made with triple DCOE Webers and the usual headwork and so on... The 1.9 liter 4 banger was used for many years and got a bit bigger during the years, first it went to 2.0 and then to 2.2 and at the end it was at 2.4 liters, taht little engine is one of the most popular in rallye-competitions in Europe and a 2.4 built the right way usually produces between 240 to 270 hp and still have enough tourqe to make good power coming out of tight corners on gravel-roads.

so let me get this right, you are using 4' pistons in your 250 and the motor is holding together? did you sleeve the heck out of it to make that happen, or did you use some form of block filler, I thought that these motors would not last long at all even on the street if you went to a 4' piston, let alone racing on the track, anyone else think this is kinda cool, and an interesting prospect?
