is it ohv or flathead? could be the elisive 254 flatty. thats an M series, should have an M on the head #, also they have a large oilpan compared to the 226. if its ohv, its a 215 most likely. if it IS a 254 its a pretty rare bird

Subbass32,
Thanks for the info. Yes,it is a flathead and
believe it or not the truck has 17,000 miles on
it and been kept in a building since new. It was
bought from a local dealership and used as a
tank truck for fuel for 1 year and then sold to
the city I live in and used to wash streets. They
quit using it for that about 25 years ago and since have used twice a year to water down the
race track at the fair grounds.
Is the 254 based on the 226? The man that owns
it thought the dist. was in a different location
than the 226.
I'll see him tomorrow and ask him to get some
numbers.

Thanks alot

I got some numbers for the truck. The Ser.# is
F60M3P.The # on the cyl. head is 8MTH-6050-B.
Do you think it is a 254? If it is could you give me the bore and stroke?

Thanks alot

Could be a 254, they were the 'M' engine. What does the oil pan look like? if it has a really big winged sump, then its a 254.

Oh yes, the 254 is a 3.5 bore and 4.4 stroke. the 226 has 3.3 bore. The engines are very similar, but I think the block is different, I dont think you can bore out a 226 safely. The distributors are the same on the 226 and 254, on the side of the block. In the early 226 G series, up to 46 or 47, the dist was a pancake on the front of the motor.
