Hi everyone... I thought I would post a few pics of another 265 engine I recently brought over, incase anyone was curious what the "other" Mopar inline looks like
Here is the short block..I had my buddy in Oz pull the head to make sure it was a standard bore before sending it..

Here is the head..

Here is a factory dual outlet exhaust manifold with the intake still there as well.

And just for good measure, here is a starter...the nose looks real similiar to a US slant/v-8 one you can see..

Hope you like a look at the engine !
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 09/06/03 06:08 PM
Oops, almost forgot.. here is the normal exhaust manifold as well..

My Charger uses a header and six-pack, but you can see what the average car got this way at least

Ozhemi,

Please explain me some details, as long as I live in Brasil, and these engine is quite interesting but never read any details about it: what does it has todo with the 225 slant 6? is there any realtion between them? how many main bearings, 4 or 7? and in the above pics could not locate the distributor's placement, where does it goes?
Thanks!
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 03/08/04 04:03 PM
The Aussie Hemi and the Slant share nothing at all... it was designed completely seperately.
It's a 7 main bearing bottom end, and has very good horsepower potential, making just over 300 hp. from the factory.
As well, they used a unique casting technique and were about 15 pounds lighter then a slant, while being stronger as well.
As for the distributor, it's a little hard to see, but in the first pic, about 6" behind the oil filter is a green rag stuffed in the hole for the dizzy..(it points upwards..)
Posted By: Alexandre Garcia Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 03/09/04 12:06 PM
OzHemi,

Thanks! Guess the engine bolt pattern is unique too, it uses its own bellhousing?
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 03/10/04 02:20 AM
Correct, the majority of the blocks use a unique bellhousing pattern, all though there were a few made with small block v-8 pattern.
The upper bolts on the "normal" blocks actually line up with a SB, but the outer bolts and dowels are in a different location.

Good thing is though, there are aftermarket bellhousings made to attach most 4 and 5 speed manuals up to one!

Hey there...Exactly what ($$ and effort) is involved getting one of the down under Hemi 6's up North and running? Last time I checked, we had a favorable exchange rate situation. Looking for something unique to lite the fire in my P15 Wagon. Enough Bowties and Blue ovals floating around So Cal to anchor a battleship....
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 04/01/04 02:55 PM
Price varies a little bit.. depending on what all you want with them. Email me if you'd like some more info on that..

I have 4 or 5 more of the 265's leaving next week from Oz.. one of which is a good runner out of a car, complete (won't open that one up) the others had had the head off to check bore ;figure if anyone will want to rebuild them, best to start with a standard bore one \:D

I do have a 245 here now if you wanted one to start mocking up mounts and such (the head is from a different engine, and missing a couple of valves, the short block was a good runner though)
Posted By: Marc Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/01/04 06:54 PM
Ive only had coffee to drink today but must be seeing things, what a cool engine. Why didnt they ever get to the states?
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/01/04 10:14 PM
Not sure, think America was more concerned with V-8 design and developement for it's muscle cars, where as Oz went smaller with the 265, and still had the fastest production car in Australia when it came out (and quickest 6 cylinder car in the world I read somewhere the year the E-49, top spec six-pack car came out..)
Posted By: gearhead Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/02/04 02:00 PM
What is the overall length?

Can you get parts for these State-side, or will we need to order everything from down under also?

How much are these aftermarket bellhousings?
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/02/04 02:12 PM
Overall length (from back of block to water pump pulley) is about 32.5"

Parts are not available here (apart from what I have, ha ha) but over in Oz no problem..

Bellhousings run about US$550 or so..

BTW, my container is due to arrive in about a week and a half...guess I better make some room in the garage soon \:D

Here is an engine pic of mine by the way, with the factory intake and a repo header..

(I'll just link to it, instead of posting it here, kind of a big pic...)

300 HP factory, dual exhaust from factory, this engine is excelent. No wonder why Chrysler was going under in the US, they kept all the good stuff overseas, talk about suicidal tendencies, it's like Chrysler was planing it's own demise. Well, I just saw the pic of the 3 DCOE's, That made it, I will save my bucks and in a while I will get that set up.
I was thinking about the engine mounts on the 265 vrs the 232 AMC, are those close? anyways, my Jeep has a ladder frame, so it would not be too dificult to do something about it. 300HP, I have a lot of thinking to do today!

The 300hp cars used a factory tube header, my car has a repo one on it (think you can see it in the pic..
The dual outlet is still cool though I think !

There was one of those triple Weber carb intakes on Aussie eBay that just ended today. Had no takers w/ 6 hrs to go, a little pricy at $850 AU, but those Webers ain't cheap.

OzHemi, your engine is bad-ass, man!
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/05/04 02:03 PM
$850 with Webers is cheap for an original 6 pack intake..(average if its a repo) figure the setup on my cars is still worth a couple of grand in Oz nearly. (all original except for a couple of pieces of linkage)

Remember how much good used 45 DCOE Webers are going for times 3, and it gets a little more in reason \:\)

Oz, what kind of car is your 265 in?
I will bring in a pix of my jeep.

Oz: This Aussie site www.hemiperformance.com.au sells performance hemi rebuilds. Do you know anything about them? I believe the prices listed are in AU dollars, so US would be about 1/3 less. It would be a good deal, depending on shipping cost (if they ship to US).
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/05/04 11:55 PM
It's in my Australian Charger..
Mine is on the left (sold the others... also have a yellow one at the moment now too)
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/05/04 11:59 PM
I would stay away from hemiperformance.. they have a bad reputation from everyone I have talked too...

I do my own importing and exporting, and just get my own engines through connections and friends.
Non of the engines arriving next week are rebuilt, but I could import those if someone wanted to pay for one before hand..
Posted By: Drew, II # 4211 Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/06/04 12:24 PM
OzHemi,You certainly have ignited a lot of interest with your Aussie Mopar dealings. The editor of 12PORTNEWS should rangle an article out
of you for puplication. You have unique experience that I'm sure would make interesting reading.
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/06/04 10:01 PM
Cool, nice cars, they have indeed the foreign touch, those tail lights I've never seen before in a US Marketed Chrysler. Excelent, and I suppose those are RHD. Well, coinsidence or not, my powerfull postal Jeep 6 cyl is also a RHD. I just changed the dis adv springs for the second fastest in order(spring kit supplied w/ dist from MSD) and the effect was inmediate and dramatic, WOW! I like it. I also changed the bushing for the total advance, instead of the 21 degree already there, I installed the 28, so 28 plus the 8 initial, I got 36 total adv, = any vaccumm adv available under vaccumm.
If this one downdraft Weber 32/36 acts like this(aided by dist, cables 8.5 and box from MSD)I can only wonder what 3 DCOE's, a cam and headwork would do. Add that to a 265 300HP 6 cyl, what a monster.

Oz: What is the freight cost to import one of these cars into the US, delivered to Long Beach? Also would you know freight cost of complete motor?
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/07/04 03:03 AM
Those cars remind me about the movie "Mad Max" .
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/07/04 03:44 AM
I charge US$3000 all up to ship a car to here in LA... for an engine, figure around $300 would do it.

Speaking of Mad Max, I have a HQ Holden at the moment too (the Night Rider's car) and also an XB GT sedan (like the police cars..)
I have had a XB coupe (the black car he drove...) but non of those at the moment..

Oh, catdog... if anyone would like any info on the engines, I would be happy to pass along what ever I can...

Oh, and my container from Oz arrives over the weekend.. and my ported Hemi head is in there too... more projects ! ha ha...
Posted By: buickroadster Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/07/04 07:03 AM
there's an old saying here in oz---go hard,go hemi,or go home!!('23 buick roadster pickup,370hp,propane fuelled,alloy headded,triple carbed,street driven,090" over bored ,265 hemi!!)
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/07/04 07:00 PM
Mad Max, that was the movie, those Masd Max movie cars then had the 265's in? Plenty of power, super charged.
About bringing a car here to the US, what is the DMV process? Should we try only pre 74 cars(exempted from smog)...will a smog time car(post 74/75) requiere retrofitting w/ smog devices, which would be a nightmarish situation, let aside the damage to the performance of the motor?
For the engines, do any good rebuilt 265's are available in NZ , or would the best bet be to get a rebuilt kit and import a carcass engine and do the job here? I think, for practical reasons, to bring a already rebuilt engine might be better, those engines are not known here, ...just brainstorming.

The Mad Max police cars were Falcons (I have one of them here now too, ha ha) not Mopars.

You can legally import anything 25 years and older into the US, but I stick with pre-74 if it's for me, so as to not worry about California smog stuff, it would not be worth the effort in my eyes to go through the referee process for the sake of a year or 2 newer model car.

As for New Zealand, there are 265's there too (imported from Australia), but I can not really speak for thier market at all.

As for rebuild here or there, guess that would be your personally preference, you can just get all the parts and do the machine work here, or do it all there... just depends on the person.
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/08/04 08:21 PM
I live in Redondo Beach, travel around all the time, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Garden Grove etc, perhaps I can drop by and check your stuff sometime, I can show you my DJ5D, modest, but I like it, soon to be painted Navy air force grayish/blu flat paint. One of a kind. It has something in common w/ your Aussie cars, it is a RHD.

Ya, that would be cool... by mid week I should have unloaded another container and will have another 265 powered Aussie Charger here as well (2 for the drive of one, ha ha)

I'll holler when everything is here if you'd like to check them out !
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/11/04 03:23 PM
I was thinking about the cyl head for the 265, and the similarity it has with the 232 engine(jeep). The cylinder head looks like it would fit the 232 engine, would that be posible?
My cylinder head is kind of similar, the water ports, shape, except for not being Hemi( my cyl head is similar, but the valves are not Hemi, are flat, close to, but not Hemi.
I will investigate.

Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/12/04 02:41 PM
The Aussie head would not interchange with anything built over here I am afraid... bore spacing, head bolt patterns, water jacket ports, etc would all be different to the AMC engine I am afraid.
Posted By: Tim Keith Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/15/04 11:54 PM
The "Hemi" six was developed to replace the 251 flathead six that was used in U.S. built trucks thru the mid '60s. There was also a 265 version in the '50s. The original Hemi head mockups for the 1951 V8 was done on the 251 six blocks.

Chrysler had two series of inline sixes until it was decided that the small V8 was adequate for the truck market. Until '55 Chrysler had three different inline six series, up to 413 inches for heavy duty trucks.

The overall length of the "Hemi" six is too long for some U.S. applications. A slant six is 26" long from bellhousing flange to water pump flange.
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/18/04 09:18 PM
The 265 is long, but it can be squeezed into a US engine bay.. I have supplied some bits to a guy putting one into a '68 Dart. Gonna be tight, but think he will get it in.
The Aussie bodied cars built when the hemi was released, actually were about 3.5" longer in the front section then the US conterpart.. to give ample engine clearance.
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 05/26/04 10:32 PM
Just unloaded another container today... and thought I would share a pic of the latest engines to come over... the heads were wrapped up seperate from the 2 engines.. and the big wooden box has my fully ported head in it. I'll get some shot of the chambers and ports if you all are interested as soon as I open it up. (still have to go through the new pile of toys in the garage \:\)

the hemi will fit the US engine bay ,as this is a common swap in OZ.the fit into an early val is fairly tight(with the fan in place)but if the fan(and the water pump) is removed, and replaced with an electric replacement, there is ample room.the engines have also found there way into all types of cars and hot rods.from datsuns, fords ,GM makes and i even saw one fitted to rambler hornet(went quicker than the V8 it replaced!.
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/04/04 01:39 PM
Yep, my buddy in Michigan doing the swap into a Dart will probably go the electric fan route as well.. should clear the water pump pully it looks like (just)
The only thing I am not sure of, spacewise, would be the clearnace on a six-pack to the brake booster on a LHD car ?
Think he will be running a single carb though (at least for the time being)
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/07/04 02:41 AM
Hy, been away for a while, busy, but back. Looks like you also brought in a car, is it a hemi?
Those pixes of the cylinder head look excelent. Are you rebuilding the motor over here? Cam, pistons, etc, what kind of HP are you looking for?
Jaime.___________________________
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/07/04 12:27 PM
Yes, the car that I brought over was this...

And it is all ready been delivered to its new home in Tennesee !

As for my plans, I will probably run the head on my existing short block for now, it's nice and tight with a mild cam.. should make 320 - 330 hp or so? With the proper solid cam,etc it would go 350-360 I would hope.
I am considering the idea of going forced induction though, building a short block with one of the other 265's I have around at the moment.. if I do that, figure a mild centrifigal supercharger setup should get me into the 500hp range. (along with the proper cam and induction/exhaust as well...)
Posted By: PostalJeepPerformance Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/08/04 05:28 PM
Cool, what a lucky guy, the new owner of that beast. Excelent car, right hand drive, and powerfull. Also differnt, I like that. I will save my bucks, I will get a 265.
That forced induction engine you have in the plans will be incredible. Supercharged or Turbo, that 265 will fly off the car!
What is under the hood of this car(one you just brought in), triple DCOE's? These guys in Tennesse are going to halucinate.

The Magenta car is a six-pack, and still has factory 3 speed manual as well \:\)

The blown engine will be down the track a little, but the rack and pinion,5 speed, and ported head will all be happening soon at least !
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/11/04 02:05 AM
Here is another pic for everyone... mocked up my 5 speed swap on a spare engine.. It's an Aussie made conversion bell housing, and just a T5 I got locally.. (it is all nice and clean now too \:\) )

OzHemi... if you run out out suppliers, I can get these engines for you. I can also organise rebuilding of them here if that's a help.

My nephew builds race engines for HQs, but he's currently building up a '64 Phoenix with a Poly 318 to race in Appendix J and would happily build Hemis for you as a sideline. Standard or modified. He's excellent with head work.
Posted By: OzHemi Re: Aussie Hemi pics - 06/24/05 12:58 AM
Thanks, but I have a few engines sitting in my garage now, and 3 or 4 more standard bore 265's in my mate's shop in Melbourne waiting for the next container we are sending here in a month..

(I do all my own building as well, including the 308 I am currently doing for my Torana)

Thanks for the offer though !
