Tried and tried to get into classifieds to advertise Engine Wanted, but couldn't. So, I'll try here.

I need a rebuildable block for a '62 thru '70 Chevy II 153 ci 4 cyl engine. Has to be able to be bored to .040, because I've already got the pistons.

I had the engine in my Model A, and running, when I found out it had a crack at the bottom of the inside water jacket! Email address: drh@digital-link.net

Finding a chevy2 4 banger maybe a little bit on the slim side. But here is some food for thought How about The Tech4 out of a s10 or blazer they came in a few different things Just try to stay away from ones the are mounted sideways LOL their maybe other things you would have to get for sure other wise. We are putting one into a Model T and it came from a S10 Hope this helps}[oooooo]

Twisted...Can't go the 2.5 liter (151) route. They can't stand much of the stress of being souped up. In stock form they'll last a long time, but the cylnders are awful thin and the crankshafts aren't half as strong as the older Chevy II 4-bangers. Hope you have good luck with yours, but I wouldn't build too much power into it, if you want it to live.

Evil....I know they are more rare in some parts of the country, but can't believe you haven't seen one in 35 years! I've rebuilt two in stock form and souped up two. Mercruiser used the same engine in a marine form. I had a 153 in a Chevette and had this one in a Model A before I discovered the water jacket was cracked. Don't trust having it fixed.

Keep you eyes open for me, though!

Dang-it, I coulda bought that sucker, but I didn't know, back then, that my engine was cracked! I'll keep checking. Appreciate your response to my request.

may have better luck lookin for a boat application.... the navy use to use the 153 to power there target boats. when my dad was stationed in hawaii he watched many a 153 powered boat get blown up and sunk (course that doesn't help you). good luck

Look at boat yards.. call boat repair shops. I used to have a '67 153 in a '67 boat. It had a OMC outdrive. It had dual 1 brl carbs... quite peppy engine.

Hello, check the Forklift wrecking yards, they were very common in Hyster and several other brands into the 80's.A local forklift yard here has 4 or 5 at least but, I thought he was kind of pricey ($350). I have some friends who have some also --I will see if any are for sale. Paul

I use to live in Northern California
that did nothing but old stuff.My good friend still runs the yard.We use to get early Nova's with lots of inline sixs and a few with V8's.We use to and my friend still does get cars far back as the 1920's,but no four bangers.The yard I work at now does nothing but late model stuff.

MercMarine and OMC both made 153 4 cyls for boats and are relatively common. I think both came with a 2 bbl but OMC had an optional 2X1 bbl intake. However, Mercmarine also made a 181 4 cyl based the 153 Chevy II block. It used a different head, an 8 port with bigger valves, which would need new intake and exhaust manifolds, but have you considered using your existing head from the 153 on a 181 shortblock? More cubes are better, regardless of the engine size, and you may be able to find the 181 easier.

The 181 was also used in industrial applications such as forklifts, as mentioned above, but may also show up in generators and were sometime used to start big diesel engines. Besides boats and forklifts, some US Mail jeeps also used 153's.

This is an Interesting 153 Chevy four cylinder thread from 2004.

These were popular in sprint cars for a long time!! There are STILL some used parts that show up every once in a while on the various forums for sale.

Mercruiser still uses a version produced by GM that offers 181 cubic inches! It's also used in forklifts and industrial machinery! They are solid little power plants, even if they ARE a little vanilla!! They have a good deal of parts interchangeability within the various models and share a lot of parts and characteristics with the 230/250 Chevy sixes. One of the neatest characteristics is the fact that you can bolt a regular Chevrolet transmission to these little fellers!! PoweeGlide to 4L80E and any manual transmission combo as well!!

I'm currently accumulating parts for a 153 that's in my little Model A/'24 Dodge rat rod coupe. I've fabricated a number of pieces for the car and even built a header and ram intake manifold for it!! I'm planning on changing crankshafts, rods, and pistons to make my 153 into a 175" stroker with a turbocharger.
