So I figured out the problem. For anyone who is interested here goes. A few months ago I bought what I thought would be a cloyes timing set, the neat one with the three keyway crank gear, from Clifford via Internet. I have bought this set from Clifford before. Turns out, Clifford does not carry the set anymore (jack Clifford died a few years ago and his son in law is now running the biz.), too expensive. Cloyes themselves do not make the set anymore. Apparently made them up for jack who purchased a bunch of them at a time. At any rate, without telling me the above, Clifford sent me a replacement engine tech set. I called and complained, told to return the set, got underwater at work, never got around to returning. Used the set because I had them, the gears installed but the crank gear stuck our like a 16th of an inch, a lot. Turns out what Clifford sent me was a set for a 230/250. They way you can tell without having part numbers is to lay a straightedge across the cam gear. If the hub is level with the edges of the gear, then it's a 235/261 gear. If the hub is raised above the edges of the gear, it's for the later motors. For Clifford to make such a fundamental mistake is just unacceptable for a business that is supposedly expert on 6 cylinders. I don't think I will ever deal with them again.
