If your looking for a high output 4 have a look at this one.

For the 2012 MY

LLV  Canyon, Colorado 2.9 Vortec 2.9L I-4 VVT DOHC SFI 95.5 x 102 10.0 185 hp ( 138 kW ) @ 5600* 190 lb-ft ( 258 Nm ) @ 2800* this is SAE NET power

This engine when modified can make another 30-40 HP in street trim with exhaust porting, header and a tune.

I've got both a five and a six cylinder version of that motor!
They all have big capacity oil pans- 6 qt. for the 5 cyl, and 7qt for the 6 cyl. Quickchange oil joints love to see the Atlas family comming.

I think that torque curve is even flatter than the six.

I think that the Ecotec would be a better choice for the 4, there must be a reason that GM used them for their sponsored land speed cars. Of course I'm kinda partial to them because of ther reasons..

I think it was a political decision. The ecotec is the base engine in just about every car GM sells right now. Well a lot of them anyway.
Pro/cons. The cool thing about ecotec is that you can get forged internals from the turbo variant. Also direct injection, dual VVT, and cast aluminum intake manifolds.
On the con side, you'll need all that tech to overcome a 45% displacement deficiency to the 2.9l. 2.9 has bigger ports/valves to match.
I was just thinking how cool it would be to put a 3.7 into a Solstice.

Is the hood that long? Long enough for the five cylinder?

How tall is the Atlas compared to the Ecos, as the Atlas 4,5, and 6s all have a 4" plus stroke, I've seen some wierd multicolored representations of the Atlas somewhere growing out of a small block to theie size relationship, and the Atlas seems TALL (and colorful). It would be neat to have to aqdd a "power bulge" to the hood of a Solstististice.(not misspelled-studdered, or "Tillised"))

Dunno. But Mallet can get a V8 in there, and I've seen an I6 swap before.

Yeh, it's quite tall! Depending on oil pan, manifold etc.

Let's see now: Who was in charge when Hudson -- great inline racers! -- went down, in Washington and at AMC? Who was in charge when AMC went down -- the whole corporation?

i learn a lot about inline engines and their modifications on this site every day. Brother Limequat is especially knowledgeable about the Vortec engines and their possibilities. When i had a 1994 Mazda Miata i thought long and hard about a Vortec I4 in that chassis. i like what he has done with similar vehicles.

i do not learn much of anything worth the time from political discussion anywhere online. i don't do no politics. It's an idol. i hope that this forum does not descend into paranoid political rant. When it does, i'm out of here.

God's Peace to you.

Perhaps if posters want to state their political perspectives they should post them in Bench Racing which is an open discussion forum. Another site I belong too absolutely forbids political discussion and monitors it closely. The webmaster here could impose sanctions here too if statements go too far with personal targets. I would hate to see any Inliner leave this site if it drifts too far from its intended purpose, the dissemination of useful Inliner information and help to those that request it.

The Ecotec has the parts and technology in place to produce 7.5 to 8 hp.per cubic inch, I'm pretty sure that GMPP didn't care about politics, just how to go fast and put the GM banner out there, if the Vortec 4 was better deal they would have used it., I'll have to give the Vortec 6 as having the best potential for performance and that will probably inmprove as more prodiucts are developed.

It's well known from past experiences that ONE political statement quickly degrades into a series of rants as everyone involved wants to have their personal opinion published.

Those of you that have been here a while know, and the newer members are being reminded now, that NO political, religious, or other subjects that are inappropriate to this forum will be tolerated and, should they occur, will be deleted without comment.

Dang, What did I miss? Religion - Politics? Who's to blame. You guys with more than 4 cylinders are going to have to pay higher entrance fees or pull two or more plug wires just to do your fair share. You are not entitled to more horse power just because you can afford it and are smarter than the rest of us. We have the right to go just as fast as you. It is an inalienable right endowed by our cam grinder and protected by the rule book.

Roughly 5.8"

For any serious performance use most folks have gone to a 6" rod. When Jeff W. (Aug 2011 Car Craft Turbo 4200 Camaro) wanted rods he worked with K1 rods and they made several 4340 set for quite a bit less than Crower. I think they still have at least 4 sets but best to ask Jeff.
