Can someone please tell me the total length of a stock oil dip stick for a chevy 250 motor? Or perhaps a picture of one? I'm not sure if I have the stock one and having a wrong reading.

I have one out of a 70 nova. Total length from top of handle to tip is 15 1/2"
The actual part that slides into the tube is 12 1/2" long. If you need a pic let me know.

Hi,
just wanted to add that it's probably a good idea to compare dipstick tube length also. Same dipstick would read different for shorter or longer tubes.

OK my dip stick is actually 17.5" in total length. 14.25" just the part that goes into the tube. The tube is 5" long. It seems to me that mine should be the correct stock that came with the motor but why am I getting that is over full. I have exactly 4 quarts in with the filter and still reads way too full. I'm lost. By the way it came out of a 70 camaro.

I measured mine when I had engine apart and you can fill up to the "F" on the word full before it hits the crank with engine stopped.
On previous engine I over filled it by 2 quarts to see what happens... blows out front crank seal.

Brown Surgar, I think that I see the problem. I went out and measured my dipstick again. My tube is 5 inches to the block from the top of the tube. However my dipstick only measures 12 inches from the end of the stick to the start of the handle. Yours looks like it measures 14 inches or so. The tube goes up inside the handle 1/2 of an inch if the mark on the tube is correct, I am going by what part of the tube is wiped clean by the dipstick. If I am right then 5 quarts of oil will look way over full if you have the same pan and 5 inch tube as me. I know that mine is totally stock. By the way, not counting the early Chevy II oil pans does anyone know how many different 194/230/250 oil pans were made? Jay6155
