I've got a 55 Dodge 230 in my 38 Dodge PU and the starter packed it in, I've heard that I need a 12 volt starter to match the ring gear and a 6 volt starter won't match up, the only thing wrong with it is the Bendix is worn out. So I'm looking for info on interchanges, I believe this is why the thieves never got it any farther down the road.

Let me see if I can find my starter books and get a part number for you.

Took the broken starter to an old auto electric shop in Bend Oregon and got it identified as a Prestolite 160-353 starter for a 57-58 Chrysler and they just happen to have a NOS Bendix for it. Sometimes life is groovy.

Good deal! Those old shops are fading fast. Several years ago on a trip to Texas we found a shop in Kingman that rebuilt the OD solenoid for my son's Studebaker. A couple of years ago I drove by and it was closed. frown

Kingman?

Last year I got some good deals on bits for my van at a wrecking yard out of town to the south there.

I should add here that this part of the 230 (and also the 250) engine is more of an issue in Australia...

To get local content up, we had locally made starter motors and they had different tooth counts on the gears. You need to be sure which one you've got before fitting anything otherwise they chew out the gears.
