Hey everyone it’s my first thread I’ve got a 82 c20 with a 292 and a four speed and I’m wanting to go with a new carb with electric choke it’s my daily driver and I want to make it easy to start in the mornings and more reliable the one on it now is tired and I’m honestly not sure what to get any opinions thanks in advance

Stock(ish) 1V or upgrade to a 2V?

I have had good luck using Rochester 2GCs or Motorcraft 2100 / 2150 series two-barrels.

How about a new or rebuilt carb just like on the engine from the factory except fitted with a manual cable operated choke?

If your ok doing a manifold swap or modifying a stock one..

A rodchester dual jet (front half of a Qjet) off of a 80 ish 305 will be a lot more efficient. They come with electric choke.

The Pinto carb (weber 5200 progressive 2bbl) was always electric & water heated choke, super reliable carb, very good on gas, lots of folks here and on fordsix have run em with an adapter.

Without an adapter, that would be my top choice tho I have only run it on the Pinto.

I have not had good luck with the smog Rochester MV 1bbl. A buddy of mine got so mad at his, he punched out his own truck windshield one morning. Well ok he was only mid-30s, still just a kid.

I've had very good luck with the old Rochester B, both the mid-size 194-250 carb and the big jug 250HiPo-292 carb. Some start better than others though, and no factory electric choke.

If you go to a 4bbl intake, you have a lot of reliable choices.
Either the autolite 2100 as mentioned, or, I have run several autolite 4100 carbs, very reliable, they start good, run good too. The 292 will even partly open the secondary as these carbs are only 440-500cfm.

The most supported carb would be the AFB, aka Edelbrock Performer. Ive run the 1406 600cfm and it ran good, about as fast as my Holleys, super reliable, not as needy as Holley carbs, and they come with electric choke, and you can even get parts at Autozone or Oreilly. Probably the best "supported" choice. On a stock 292, they don't really use the secondary, just the primary and the secondary transition ciruit for about 300cfm total. But, so what? Theyre reliable, well-supported, electric choke, the 4bbl intakes are kinda pricey but re-sellable.

I have done the dual jet swap that efi-diy talks about on my 78 nova with a stock 250 engine and a turbo 350 trans, also stock. Over the decades I have done a few carb swaps, this has to be the best swap I have ever done! Let me share some pointers that I learned along the way. 1. Get the air cleaner from a car of truck that has one of these carbs, the opening for the carb is special and no other air cleaner will fit that I know of.
2.there are 2 sizes of this carb made, the throttle blades are the same size at 1-3/8 but 2 different Venturi sizes 1-3/32 and 1-7/32. Be sure and get the bigger one. The bigger one will flow about 300 cfm (at 3.0 hg that 2 bbl carbs are rated at)
3. To my knowledge there are no carb adapters made that will fit this carb, I had to have one made but it sure was worth it! The ease of starting, throttle response and drive ability difference is night and day. I would recommend that you get a carb for a 79 305 Carprice. That will get you the big one and get you close on jetting because the engines are the about the same size. If anyone else has done this swap I’d like to know about it so I could learn.
