Hi all,
A guy contacted me asking if I had a spare sump for his 1954 235.

I know there was a change in the rear mains seal after 1954, so I was wondering if I can offer him one of my 1955-62 sumps to replace his 1954 sump?

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Hi Mark . . .

A '54 235 is on the trailing edge of a transition period. The '57 Parts Master Catalog is online at tocmp:
The Old Car Manual Project - '29-'57 Chevy Parts Master

It shows a common oil pump through '55 first series engines - and then a new pump for 55-57 second series engines. No experience here but the pickup/sump arrangement could have changed along with the pump.

You are correct on the rear-main seals - the '54 oil pan is another odd duck in terms of bolt patterns and such - more in common with a stovebolt than the more modern 235 pan.

Thanks for the advice - I will look into it, and advise him accordingly
