I guess I better introduce myself. I've posted a few questions already but know better than to not say hello. I got anxious and just started posting questions. LOL!
I recently picked up a '55 Bel Air with a 235 and I have started modernizing it. I have installed a set of Wheel Vintiques 17" Rally wheels with Coker redline tires. I installed a Ridetech Street Grip suspension and a T5 trans.
I now plan to update the inline six with a Holley 2 barrel Avenger EFI system, serpentine belt system with power steering and a Vintage Air system. I will also add a turbo, ditch the distributor and run individual coils and a crank trigger.
This is my first time working with an inline six and I have spent hours reading up on what I want to do.
I see other people have done most or all that I want to do but it looks like my 235 is far from the most popular size. I keep finding cool parts only to find out they won't work on a 235.
Well, I will keep reading up and thanks everyone for the help.

Welcome, It's always good to have fresh minds. When you say "modernize" I'm not sure where you want to go. Most modern would be the 4.2 Trailblazer DOC 275 hp engine. Sorta' modern would be the 250-292 '70s-'80s engines and Classic updated would be what you suggest for your 235. Updating/modernizing the 235-261 Chevy engines and the 270-302 GMCs is more fun for me. But I'll be 72 in a few days. The important question is : What will you really use the car for?. Answer that question honestly and the rest will fall into place. There is no "one engine fits all". That said, there are a lot of more modern mods to be made to the old engines than are in Bill Fishers 1954 books.

I want to mondernize the 235 that came with the car. I am learning more and more that the 235 is not the way to go but, I have a thing for using the original motor. Sure I could put a modern inline or an LS easy but, that would be the easy way to go and everyone does that.

The bottom line is: How vintage do you want to be? Short of all-out racing, you can have a frisky street engine with the 235.
