The contact surface for the seal is pretty pitted.
Polishing improved it but it?s still not great.
I have a crankshaft grinder so remove material is not a big issue, looks it would about .005?
I haven?t much experience with rope seals, how do they work on an
Undersize journal?

If .005" will clean it up I don't think that would be an issue. The rope is squeezed quite a bit and the ends have to be trimmed because of extra length. The best seal you can buy is the one from BEST Gasket Co. It comes with some simple tools and good instructions. There is a way to use a newer MOPAR rubber seal but I don't how to do it. It requires some machine work and I don't know what seal is used. Somewhere on here ,in the GMC threads, it is discussed.
