Jeep 258 straight six -- non adjustable rockers.

Just replaced cam and lifters, with appropriate break-in. Have a ticking rocker arm. Pulled cover and checked rocker arm to valve lash, cold---

0 on all 6 intakes and 1 and 5 exhaust

.005 on 2,3,4 exhaust

.024 on 6 exhaust

Is there a way to convert to adjustables?

Suspected culprits -- worn lifter bore creating slop, or slightly bent or worn arm, or some problem with that fulcrum. Any wisdom on where to go next appreciated.

Dear PM;

I would replace #6 exhaust with a new pushrod and rocker arm.

While your at the dealer see if they make adjustable or 'oversize' pushrods for that engine.

The lifter bore is not likely as the wear occurs on the valve stem, rocker/pushrod etc. I have seen the stud(s)that hold the rocker (fulcrum) pull out enough to cause this however on various engines.

I wouldn't worry about the rest, as the .005 will "zero out" when hot.

Good luck, JM, #3370

Check out the rocker arm that has the noise.Remove it from the head and inspect the rocker arm ball and the inside of the rocker arm for large amounts of wear or galling/burning.Some original factory rocker arms had a rocker ball that was made out of a aluminum/diecast like material.They were soft to help quiet the valvetrain area when the engine was new.Over time,high miles,or heat damage they would make noise.Note,you may have more than one rocker with a noise.Aftermarket rocker arms have a steel ball with a series of slots that provide additional lubrication to the critical rocker arm ball area.
Good luck hope you find the problem.
