Good afternoon everyone. I have a question on where the timming cover and oil pan gasket meet. I am currently building a 292 to replace my tired 250. I am now ready to put on the front cover and oil pan. My oil pan has bolt holes at the front which bolt into the front cover; the gasket does not have any holes. I know my 250 does not have these bolts. Do I have the correct gasket or should I use it and use no bolts at the area? What is the best way to seal this area? Thanks alot, Perry

you have the correct gasket for the newer motors. older 250/ 292 used bolts to join the timing cover and oil pan. you could just add alittle silicon where the holes are on your oil pan, or you could weld them closed.

Thanks for the reply it helps alot! I see by your signature bar that you are running a 292 700r4 combo. I have the same transmission behind my 250 now, and I would like to replace the flex plate when I change out the motor. I'm not sure what to get. Any sugestions? Thanks Perry

The flexplates are the same with the possible exception if you have an early crank with the 1/2" bolts. If that is the case, just drill out the holes. Worked fine with my 292/700.

if your flywheel is bad and you need one for the 292 just get a new one. used ones are fairly hard to find. what year is your 292? does it use the big 1/2 bolts or the same as the 250? if it is the 250 size then any v8 auto flywheel will work. or as bruce said just drill the holes bigger. tom

The crank is a forged 1963. What are the things I will need to do this job? Thanks Perry

Just a note, if replacing with a v/8 flexplate you must use a PRE-'86 (2 piece seal, internal balance type). The early cranks used 7/16 x20 NF threads, also measure the old flexplate diameter and replace with the same or you will need to change starter. 153 tooth is 12.85 dia.-168 tooth is 14.13 dia. www.jegs.com has both sizes in the Jegs street version, also use NEW flexplate bolts, they are a special design. The 24/7 Tech person can help if you decide to go that way, with the above information. The local GM parts should carry the bolts.

the early crank uses the small 7/16 bolts as do any smallblock chevy's. all you need is a flywheel for a sbc in the same diameter as your bad one. tom
