Hello,

I'm new to this board. I hope to learn a lot here.

I currently have a '53 Chevy 210 2 door sedan project that I am working on. I have a 230 straight six (that I got for free), a TH-350 tranny, and a '56 Chevy rearend.

Does anyone know where I can get a new flexplate for this motor? I haven't had any luck with GM.

That's my only question for now.
Oh, by the way I will try to post more pics. (the one in my profile is a couple of years old.)

And I live in Phoenix.

Thanks!

Weclome to the Board

Any small block flywheel will fit your 230 Just make sure if it's a 153 you get a 153 If it's a 164 you get a 164

Hi and welcome to our corner of the world.
You didn't say which direction the overall project was headed but I saw you posted from Phoenix. If you are thinking about having some pinstriping type stuff done you might want to contact Andy's Pinstriping right there in Phoenix. 520-241-6224. He will be out here on the New England scene for about another 3 or 4 weeks before he heads back home to AZ.
Andy did some lines on my 37 Chevy last Saturday and he is excellent.

Like Twisted told you, anything that fits on the back of a Small Block Chevy fits on the back of your 230 just be sure to keep the starter correct for the flywheel size. To keep from going blind counting ring gear teeth use a tape measure. The 153 flexplate is 12 3/4 inches across and the 168 is 14 inches across. Replacement flexplates may or may not come with 2 different bolt circles for the torque convertor so try to buy one that has the 2 convertor patterns. Unless you plan on goosing up the horsepower the stock TH350 convertor will be just fine.

Nice sounding ride, good luck

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. I should be able to get a small block flexplate at the local parts store.

The problem is my engine didn't have a flexplate on it when I got it. How do I know which flexplate to buy? The casting # for my block is 3921968 (I was told it was out of a '67 Nova.)

I am pretty sure the starter that is on it is the wrong one. There is only one bolt holding it to the block.

I was reading the Six Cyl. Power Manual (Leo Santucci) and it said to drill the block to accept the V8 starter and the 168 tooth flexplate. Should I do this?

As far as my plans for the car...I want it to be just a mild street kustom. I'd like to get an Offy intake with dual carbs, some split headers for dual exhaust.

Maybe get some lake pipes and have the exhaust exit through the shortest glasspaks I can find so it will be nice and loud.

I forgot to mention that the camshaft has a flat lobe. So I'd like to get a mild hydraulic cam also.

My rearend has 3:55:1 gears in it. And I'm using a TH-350. Do you think all this would be a good combo for just cruising?

(I kind of have to stick with an automatic because I put in a Walton Fabricatiuons firewall brake pedal, and got rid of the old pedals that came through the floor. The TH-350 is already rebuilt, too.)

Should I use a stock torque converter? What about a shift kit for the tranny? I'd like to get a little performance out of the drivetrain without having to make the engine too radical?

Well, that's all for tonight, I'm trying to just get some ideas. Sorry it was such a long message.

Jeff

You don't need to have the Bigger flywheel. a mild cam Like a Rv style the stock convertor will be fine. If you get more then that get what the cam would call for like maybe a 2000-3000 stall You realy shouldn't need much more then that for a daily driver No how. As for the 3:55s I wouldn't go any more then that for the street Unless you plan on running a taller tire Personaly I'd go with a little lowwer gearing to like a 3:32 But seeing that You already have those try it and see out it works out for you. You can always play with the tire size rather then buying a new set of gears.
